I would think you could boot to the CD/DVD drive and have the same boot info. on the CD. You just need to make sure your boot sequence includes the drive. Usually, the default order is the floppy, CD Drive and hard drive.

Newer machines should be able to boot to a CD or DVD.
You can find out what the machine is capable of booting from by going into the SETUP. When the machine starts, it will usually tell you what key to press to get into SETUP. you have to be attentive, because it will come up and disappear quickly.
When you get into the SETUP, look for boot options or priorities. The bootable devices will be listed.
How old is the computer you're referring to?

Thank you JCampi and Kelly,
We are dealing with:
Gateway ATxaeg Lx3 E6000 PC
Manufacture Date 2/12 03
BIOS AMIBIOS Version 06.32.00
operating system Windows 2000
The Boot Setup Utilty shows:
Boot Device Priority
Hard Disk Drives
Atapi CD-ROM Drives
When I enter Atapi CD-ROM Drives it shows:
1st Atapi CD-ROM [disabled]
I don't know if this means I can't boot from a CD but I downloaded one from
http://www.answersthatwork.com to find out and I'm still working on how to make the boot cd.

Does your CD ROM work? From what you posted, for some reason, it's been disabled. If you enable it, you should then be able to boot from it. However, it will boot from the hard drive first unless you change the boot order.
I'd wait to see what some of the other more experienced members have to say because I might be missing something.
