Good Morning Everyone, well this is somothing well worth a look and a try!

This new version 4.2 of Puppy Linux was released yesterday and comes in two sub-types, one is for older machines (usually referred to as "retro") and the other for newer machines, so if you are using an older Pentium 2 or something like that you are also catered for.

Actually last time I ran this distro it worked pretty well on an older Pentium 100.
(Needed the Ram Maxed and a swap partition though)

I am currently running it on an old Pentium 4 - 1600 with a third of a gig of RAM and it really flies.

The desktop is the nicest "tropical" lagoon kind of image, the arrangement is similar to Vista, all drives are detected at boot and displayed along the top of the task-bar. There is no problem seeing into windows XP partitions and I expect the same would apply to Vista, but I do not have a vista machine here to test.

Wireless access was simple with a GUI program which allowed easy detection and config of my Atheros chipped wireless card. (Netgear, as far as I am concerned is the best wireless componentry and cards)

The system operates "blindingly fast" probably one of the fastest operating systems that exists, which has always been the aim of the Puppy creators, and is due to it's using memory (RAM) as a hard drive medium, all programs are provided including burner, word processor and all the other stuff and it all operates excellently.

One really amazing thing with this little / big operating system is that it exists in the order of 100 megs, can run as a "live operating system" ie, booting off a CD and loading entirely to RAM without affecting the material on a hard drive, it can be used for rescuing files off a non-booting hard drive and is enormously useful to have.

It can be loaded to a flashdrive as a bootable source provided that the computer has boot ability for USB devices.

Sheer magic, well worth a look and well worth having in the event of your windows machine having boot problems, which is not uncommon!! LOL!!

This Linux system has inherent programs to enable it to create a dual-boot capability if it were loaded to a small partition on an existing hard drive, this includes a boot manager that provides a boot menu selection at start-up.

Almost like having a kerosene lantern in case of a power failure!

Cheers, Lawrence.

Good Afternoon Everyone, further to our discussion on the KH chat session PL, you might try this particulat file..........
puppy-4.2-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.iso

It is the file for running Puppy Linux on later machines, scroll down to find it, it should be in the order of 100 megs and be an ISO file.

Try this site for obtaining it....ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/

There are other mirrors available if you have problems there.

Place that file on your desktop and I suggest using BurnCDCC to create your bootable CD.
This program is available here.......(70 odd K program size)
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads-free-software.htm

Place the BurnCDCC zipped file into a folder on your desktop and unpack it back to that same folder. You can now use this BurnCDCC.exe to initiate the program to burn the CD.

Select the appropriate burner, select the ISO file, (use browse) select a slow burn speed, (slider button full left) select radio buttons for "Read Verify", "Finalize" and "Auto Eject" then hit "start", the program will then ask for a fresh CD blank, provide one and hit OK and then the burn will proceed to produce a perfect bootable CD every time.

Cheers, Lawrence.

imgburn is a specific .iso burner. I have used it successfully for about a year now. No problems using so far. So, I'm going to use mine and see if it works.

Though last night you did say my mic was a bit better. I think it was because I upped the gain. Perhaps that was the problem all along, no volume gain. It was set on 0.

Good Morning PL, well how did the ISO burn go?

BTW "There are a few need to knows" with Puppy, no double-clicking!

If the CD is not closed when it is being burned the Puppy system can save back to the CD by writing back to it, as though it were a hard drive. (kind of thing)

When you load Puppy to your machine as a "Live" system it resides entirely in RAM, (provided you have better than 256 M) this allows the CD to be removed and then the burner or CDROM can be used as for a normal system.

The system does not automatically respond when a standard music CD or movie DVD is inserted, so you need to open an appropriate program, like, (in the case of a Movie or a commercial music CD) the Xine program, this is located in the appropriate media area, opening it and using the "File > CD or DVD will start the program playing that media.

Any Data DVD's or CD's are treated differently.

Clicking on the drives icon near bottom of screen allows you to open that drive and navigate and manipulate or inspect files on it.

At Shutdown, follow the "no save" path if you don't want any material placed on your hard drive or back to the CD.

There are a lot of other little things you need to learn but they come with time.

Be aware that you can config your networking and D/L files off the net to areas on a Windows system drive if needed.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Lawrence, things going on here too much for me to burn that .iso so maybe this weekend I'll get around to that and we can talk about it on Sunday night's chat.
