Good Morning Everyone, well this is somothing well worth a look and a try!
This new version 4.2 of Puppy Linux was released yesterday and comes in two sub-types, one is for older machines (usually referred to as "retro") and the other for newer machines, so if you are using an older Pentium 2 or something like that you are also catered for.
Actually last time I ran this distro it worked pretty well on an older Pentium 100.
(Needed the Ram Maxed and a swap partition though)
I am currently running it on an old Pentium 4 - 1600 with a third of a gig of RAM and it really flies.
The desktop is the nicest "tropical" lagoon kind of image, the arrangement is similar to Vista, all drives are detected at boot and displayed along the top of the task-bar. There is no problem seeing into windows XP partitions and I expect the same would apply to Vista, but I do not have a vista machine here to test.
Wireless access was simple with a GUI program which allowed easy detection and config of my Atheros chipped wireless card. (Netgear, as far as I am concerned is the best wireless componentry and cards)
The system operates "blindingly fast" probably one of the fastest operating systems that exists, which has always been the aim of the Puppy creators, and is due to it's using memory (RAM) as a hard drive medium, all programs are provided including burner, word processor and all the other stuff and it all operates excellently.
One really amazing thing with this little / big operating system is that it exists in the order of 100 megs, can run as a "live operating system" ie, booting off a CD and loading entirely to RAM without affecting the material on a hard drive, it can be used for rescuing files off a non-booting hard drive and is enormously useful to have.
It can be loaded to a flashdrive as a bootable source provided that the computer has boot ability for USB devices.
Sheer magic, well worth a look and well worth having in the event of your windows machine having boot problems, which is not uncommon!! LOL!!
This Linux system has inherent programs to enable it to create a dual-boot capability if it were loaded to a small partition on an existing hard drive, this includes a boot manager that provides a boot menu selection at start-up.

Almost like having a kerosene lantern in case of a power failure!
Cheers, Lawrence.
