64 Bit Windows 7.0 Ultimate

Well I had little else to do today so I decided to clean install to Windows 7.0 on 64 bit Intel Penryn Core 2 Quad I had previously done what I termed to be an unsuccessful Upgrade from Windows Vista and this time it is a complete success.

All the issues I had before are gone and the pc is running very smoothly so I would guess my issue in August really had to do with a 64 bit Upgrade.

I wonder why it takes people so long to do a full install as I mean I started about 11AM and finished my first image file of the system at about 9PM and I did take 2 hours off in the middle and I have all programs, shortcuts and hardware done and tweaked.

Because it's a labor of love and is never finished. I tweak and change stuff almost every day.

I have said before and will say again - Windows 7 is a FAST installation! ! ! !

I can do a Win 7 cradle to the grave faster (now that I have done it a few times) faster than I can an XP cradle to grave. OK what do I mean by cradle to grave? When I use those terms I am speaking about a hard drive with NO operating system, not formatted, installation of Win 7, hardware drivers installed, Internet configured, Win 7 authentication, Win 7 updates, Office suite installation (and I copy the CD/DVD to the hard drive BEFORE I install), Office updates (yep even 2007 has updates and service packs), printers installed, and authenticated to my domain server (and now even authenticated to my NOVELL server :) )! This all takes LESS than 3 hours!

Rich and Dan, don't take offense at this comment (compliment) but you guys are so fast at the complete setup because you are both experts at this stuff. You are outlyers and don't represent the general popualation. If I did a clean and full install of Windows 7 I'd likely take a few days to complete the entire effort. I'd intall 7 and then take some time to install all of my software. It especially helps if you have done this several times instead of being a 'virgin.'

Well "la di da". Windows 7 is a much faster install than XP to begin with but I install a bit more than Ms Office Dan.
I also count making image files along the way at various stages and my separate file and data backup takes about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes alone to complete. The other thing that wasted a lot of time is the damn resolution. I think the graphics at each stage first Vista and now Windows 7 are vastly improved over XP but it is tougher to not follow full resolution the damn Lcd monitors want to use all the time, and that's hard on our "older eyes" ya know. There is almost no way to run 768 by 1024 any more so you have to play with the fonts and icons too much that slows this down. Also Outlook takes forever to set up especially since Verizon started screwing with their ports and they are different from GMail and Yahoo and now my server email can't take the ports Verizon uses for outgoing mail so I have to remember to send by Verizon on 2 accounts and I think I wasted more time on that than anything. I doubt you use 6 email accounts every day as I do.
