While transferring music from an old XP machine to a new Windows 7 machine, I brought up iTunes to make sure the library was updated. I noticed that there were more titles in there than I expected. So I clicked on Display Duplicates.

I'm seeing 2 of each song and they are in 2 separate places:

1) C:\USERS\<NAME>\MUSIC\iTUNES
2) C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS\<NAME>\MY DOCUMENTS\MY MUSIC\iTUNES

You can't see the DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder unless you disable HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES. Even then, you can't open open it because Access is Denied.

I noticed the hidden Docs and Settings folder on Vista also. Can someone explain what's going on with W7's file management?

Also - any way to prevent iTunes from seeing all the duplicate files?

Tony,
You can actually enter them through Windows Explorer (see below) but not to worry as Itunes won't be able to do that and will not even know they are there. I have been trying to find out for a long time why they remain actually but do not see it on either 64 bit Windows 7 pc's.

Thanks Rich. I'll have to check it out tomorrow. Tonight it's the world series for me. Another reason I won't be on PalTalk is that my 'kitchen computer' is still not running.

On the iTunes

but not to worry as iTunes won't be able to do that and will not even know they are there
iTunes found songs in both places - see post #1. Now it shows that I have two of each title: one in Users\Music\iTunes folder and one in the Vista 'Symbolic Link'
