View Full Version : Verizon Internet Service Question
I am presently using Verizon ISP at 1.5 mb for $29.95+tax.
I have the option of changing over to 768 kb for $17.95+tax.
A friend told me he could not tell the difference between the 768 KB
or the 1.5 MB service. Any opinions concerning the above would be appreciated.

I myself use Comcast cable but a few months ago I setup my daughter for the 768 DSL and was pleasantly surprised at the speed. I guess it depends on what you want to do and how much speed you really need. My daughter was coming from Netzero(Hi-speed)56K where she was paying extra so the cost was close to the same. I told her she needed to change over to DSL if it's the same money. She explained to me that some programs she would sign on and go watch TV until they came up and when she saw that the same program came up instantly on DSL she was thrilled. Like I said it's all on how much speed you really need. I'm not sure what to say to you but anyone that is on 56K will greatly improve performance by going 768 DSL.

Web surfing... probably not much difference as it does not require real speed to load web pages.
File downloads and transfers... that's where you need the pipe.

768 has served many of my clients fine and they're thrilled at >$20 a month. The only place any issue comes up is when downloading big files, like <10 mb, but even then it's a matter of 2 minutes compared to 30 seconds, which most of us can find some surfing or such to do for those 2 minutes.

The Verizon 768 DSL service is fine and dependable. If monthly
costs are a big issue with you then go for it! The slower
768 speed is fine for most people. As compared to the $29.99
fast DSL service a web typical page might take 6 seconds
to load versus 2 or 3 seconds. HOWEVER, if you often download
LARGE files then you might not be satisfied with the slower
768 DSL because then the difference is more noticeable. For
example a 25mb file might take 4 minutes to DL @ 768 kbps
and 1 minute at 3 mbps. For anyone still on dialup it's a
no brainer. I hightly recommend it.
HOWEVER, if you want to go with VOIP I believe you
can't do it with 768 DSL. Also, if you typically
download over 500 mb of files in a month, then you
are going to save about 1 hour in DL time. If saving
an hour is worth the extra cost to you then go for
the high speed DSL or CABLE.

About Verizon Prices...
For 768 DSL, Verizon started out charging $14.95/mo for the home user
and about $24/mo for the business user. They didn't advertise it much
for the business user but if you called them and inquired about it then
you could get it. That was all within the past year. Now, the prices
have gone up for the home user at $17.95/mo. They have a $19.95/mo
deal for the business user but look carefully at the details of the offer
becasue I think it's based upon 16% off of the $24/mo price for the
first year only. Be careful with Verizon, because they have a nasty
habit of drawing you in with low prices and then jacking them up later.
I quit them as my LD carrier for doing exactly that.
I hate deceptive marketing practices.

I believe that Comcast invented that marketing technique (they may even have it copyrighted!). I have never seen a Comcast cable advertisement that did not contain an introductory rate that shoots up after 3 or 6 months. OTOH the pricing of Verizon DSL in my office has been stable since I started almost two years ago.

Well they already did raise it form $14.95 to $17.95 but remember you have to sign a year's contract so whats the difference. I have had the 3.0 service going on 3 yeaqrs now, and it has never gone up. Comcast has gone up once in that time period.

I guess I'm out of the loop. When did they raise the price...This from their web page and unless they failed to update it the price is $14.95. You might be talking about the extra charges but they have always been there. Couldn't post web site text but here's the gist.
Monthly Price $14.95

Maybe they failed to change it on web page since they often give a break for going in there? But I have received mailings at $17.95 recently.

If you think back did you start at a regular price or was it a low
price that was competitive? I suspect you paid the regular price.
With Verizon or any of these companies, they like to suck you in
with special low ball offers and then change their policies or prices
after a year or so, thinking you are too stupid or passive to do
anything about it. Which most people are or they couldn't get
away with it. ;)
The way I combat this, is to talk to the telemarketers when they
call me. For example, for LD service, Verizon is the one who screwed
me so when any one of the LD companies calls me with an offer for
LD service I tell them.. "Verizon screwed me but you all operate the
same way so I'll never use any of you now for LD service again. Pass
that on to your marketing department. Now can I ask you a favor?
Please put me on your DO NOT CALL LIST. Thank You." :)
Their marketing department knows very well that for each complaint
there are thousands of other people who feel the same way. I
just keep complaining the same way when any of them call me.
You'd be surprized how one voice can make a difference. Not on
this one issue but many issues in life.
