Ok you find a nice cafe, turn on the comp and everybody looks at you because they hate that startup sound, turn of the computer they hate you again, they hate that shutdown sound too.

No doubt someone here will soon show me the proper way to do this, meanwhile I will show everyone the wrong which at least works without nagative effect.

make a folder to store the unwanted files in
click on empty area of screen
press: aplications key + w + f
name it: "startup and stutdown sounds"
press: enter

runcommand
press: winkey + r
type: C:\WINDOWS\Media
( no just copy/paste it from here then)
press: enter
find two files: 'windows xp startup', 'windows xp shut down'
drag drop them into the folder you have just made on the desktop
store folder away in case you change your mind
and bravo, you can now turn on and off your computer in public.

suggested method:
Right click speaker icon in taskbar (or open control panel, click sound and audio device applet), select "Sounds" tab.
In the "Program Events" list, click on the "event" you want to modify (Start Windows, Exit Windows, etc), in the "Sounds" drop down list scroll to and click on the "sound" you want (you can preview the new sound by clicking on the right pointing arrow button). once youve made your selection, click apply, ok.

Yes I thnk kern's way is much better,

blackmirror often one forgets to turn off the sound before shutting down, then next day back in the cafe everyone hates me again. The question is does one really need those start up and close down sounds. I don't think one can change it to music as the format isn't mp3 and also it would be very long; however, I imagine blackmirror has my next question.

New question, is there a site where one can download better sounds then?

You can change any selection to none or point it to any sound file.

As far as I can recall, it works with MP3.
I do remember having some classical files attached to certain sounds. You can also make some funny wav files.
The whole thing got boring after a while and I can't stand a noisy computer bugging me with all kinds of sounds.

Critical Stop is one that goes great with a wav of a car crash or bomb going off.

There must be a site out there with fun alternatives, I will have a look.

A usb flash drive and a few wav files can be loads of fun if you can get to someone's machine.
We once tricked one out at work with some 'alternative' sound files. Having the machine suddenly start screaming for help (exclamation or menu popup) can be very amusing as you watch the dumbfounded look on the face of the person using it.

Long ago lost, I once had a "countdown to self destruct" GUI popup for 98/ME that was good for some laughs.

How would I go about googling for alternative MS sounds, not that I wish to trick anyone, more that I would like nicer sounds than the ones MS offers. I will google but if anyone has a link already pls let on.
