If you follow the steps outlined here, you will greatly reduce the chances that your DBX files will become corrupt.. Outlook express

Disable the e-mail scan in your anti-virus program.

If you have not installed Windows XP SP2, disable automatic background compaction.

Keep the Inbox as empty as possible by moving messages to other folders you create.

Be careful that the Sent Items folder does not grow to an unmanageable size (2,000 or so messages seems a good target).

Compact all folders on a regular basis, such as bi-weekly, or more often if you make extensive use of e-mail or newsgroups.

When compacting, do not use your computer until the process is finished.

Keep your computer and anti-virus products up to date with the latest patches.

Backup your entire Store Folder on a regular basis.

Remember that you can store important messages, or messages with large attachments, outside of Outlook Express simply by dragging them from the message list and dropping them on your desktop.
Then delete the original message in the message list to keep the DBX file smaller.

Thanks for that tip, BM! Am going to experiment and see if I can drag
entire OE folders to an Outlook Express folder on my desktop.

Neat!

Bummer. Can't drag a folder with its contents from OE to the desktop or to a new folder on the desktop. If I drag just a couple of the contents of the folder, they appear almost as listed in OE. If I try to drag more or all of the contents, I get abbreviated titles (can't determine contents at a glance) and a big envelope.

Is there an easier way? Am I missing something? I'd really like to prune the list of emails, but like everything else around the house, once you get rid of it that's when you need it.

BM, you are correct. Bummer! Being able to drag an
entire folder into another folder would be a good idea
for Vista?

Perhaps one of these days I'll put some of my old emails
on a CD.
