I Full Restored 1998 Compaq Presario to OEM State, re-upated to Win98se, Re-installed IE6 and OE6 and newest desired software. I updated video card.
I now have a Windows Startup Sound as usual but not a shutdown exit sound (Da-Daaaah) that has always been there. The control panel sounds icon does nothing if clicked. I updated the sound card but still nothing. How do I get this back. Exit sound itself is not a problem, but to know something is not working properly is of concern. Do I have to reinstall Win98se to get this back, and if so do I have to reinstall IE6 and all the software????? Or is here a quick fix to try??

It's been a while since I toyed with 98's sound settings, but if you go into the sound option in Control Panel, I believe there are options for Window's Default sounds, and the ability to turn start up and shutdown sounds on and off.

BG,

You state that you updated the sound card - is that a NEW card or were you referring to the sound drivers for the card?

Did you use HP/Compaq drivers or manufacturer's drivers. SOMETIMES, the OEM's (Compaq in this case) use proprietary chipsets that get hosed when using the manufacturer's drivers for the "same" model.

You state you have startup audio but not shutdown - do you have any audio in between? If you put in an audio cd - does it play?

Have you looked in msconfig for something loading that is conflicting with the audio drivers/windows wmv files?

You can reload the window defaults if you go to Window Components in Add/Remove Programs listings - it is on the right side bar.

I think it is just going to Control panel, Sounds & Audio, cllick on Sounds, Windows Exit and if nothing in the "sounds" box open it and find Windows logoff and place that in box then hi "apply" and OK. I think 98 and 2000 did not default to Windows shutdown sound.

Rich,

Both 98 and 2000 did have exit windows audio - I have not touched my 2000 since installing it a decade ago (:D ).

Although BG has not responded - what I got from his post is that when he goes to the Control Panel and double clicks on the Sound icon, it doesn't open. I have re-read it a couple of times and that is why I suggested reloading the window components section.

I stand to be corrected on this - but BG will have to respond to clarify.

Dan,
I have a 2000 pc in my workroom that currently does not sound anything for Windows exit. It did not default to a Windows Exit, you have to set it and I believe 98 was the same way.

fwiw I agree with Dan.

But none of you have any 98 Windows new to test? I just did my Windows 2000 and it does not have Exit sound defaulted.

EXCUSE ME!

I just built a Windows 98se box earlier this week to configure for Winfax Pro setup. I have the spare setup with Windows 2000, my bench burned with XP sp1, and the bosses build box with XP sp2 (I feel like I am wrapping myself up in my work - cables ALL OVER THE PLACE).

It seems that WinFax won't communicate after sp 2 is installed and I had to "kinda" create the client's site since they have W2k and XP Pro systems. The WinFax is running on a Windows 98 box at their site so I had to build one.

AND after I loaded the sound drivers for the motherboards - W2K and W98se both had startup, error, and shutdown audio.

Then why the hell does my Win 2000 I set up a week ago not have it?
What version of 2000 did you install? Maybe that is answer. I have Sp2 on cd and then add Sp4.

I will clarify: Originally had start and shutdown sound on Win98se. They are Start.WAV and TADA.WAV and both are in the C\Win\MEDIA folder. along with many others. All my Win98se PCs have the Start and Shutdown sound and now this one does not. And in Control Panel the MULTIMEDIA and SOUNDS icon do not open anything when clicked. I tried installing windows components with Win98se update CD but it seemed to be already installed and nothing changed. Originally I had the OEM sound driver and upgraded to the ESS newer version which is the last one I had before Full Restore and reinstall. I just thought that might fix it so I reinstalled it.
Apparently in reinstalling Windows 98se update something got left out but I hated to have to install it again then redo whatever else. But i dont know how else to reinstall the Multimedia and sound properties except maybe that.
Just trying to get it back like it was. And the WAV files will not play in media player because "class not registered" and Microsoft site said no further information. If I have to maybe I will try reinstalling W98se. Unless something else surfaces.
I dont have anything new that I didnt have before this trouble.
Is there some other way to install the multimedia and sounds properties?

DAN 18960: No, it will NOT play an audio cd - just tried it. Also Media Player will not play the WAV files but other WAV players WILL.
Maybe its the ESS Maestro sound car update, or Windows itself. Cannot access Sounds or Multimedia in CPL.

Went into Accessories/System Tools/Hardware/ProblemDevices and found:
Plug And Play Software Device Enumerator
Microsoft 5.00.2020.1
streamci.dll
swenum.sys
ks.sys
Drivers not installed

Where do I get such drivers and how do I install them?

Rich : This link is great. But I read through this , tried some things, and decided this problem was getting too involved. I took the easy way out and reinstalled Win98se on top of itself and it fixed the control panel AND the Exit Sound "TADA.WAV", which if I could have accessed Sounds I could have easily set. The icons for Sounds and Multimedia had gone from inaccessible to completely disappeared. Now they are back and functioning and I have no problem devices showing. I found CDROM had Disconnect checked. When I unchecked it, it worked with audio cd. Windows CD Player and a few other players will pay audio CD, but every time I open Windows Media Player 9 and try to play audio cd it crashes, even after many reinstalls. It opens but wont play things. Its like fix one problem and more take its place. But I understand the PlugnPlay enumerator device and drivers better now and I have gotten back my Sounds for Start and Exit.
Now to work on Media Player 9.
Sound thread is ended successfully now.

hi
beating a dead horse is not what I like to do, but an old tip is worth repeating.

windows tada when you close, that was an event I did not want, for the simple fact that when a hung app interfered, the tada file could corrupt, and once corrupt, that file would hang shutdown when the bad app was uninstalled
(a hard shut while file was open, could corrupt more than one file, and what does one do when it hangs? Right...)
so, my tip is, do not use tada.
