David Pogue in his State of the Art column provides an interesting status of the coming 'n' standard in wireless communication.

A Faster Wi-Fi World Is Coming

This years edition is 802.11n, which is supposed to offer two huge advantages over the popular b and g types: 5 times the speed and 15 times the range.

That would be a big deal, if it were true. It would mean, for example, that the signal from just one transmitter one wireless router, to use the technical term could fill every room in your house with glorious waves of data.

It turns out that n does offer better speed and range nowhere near 15 times better, but generally at least 2 times. One n router should be enough to fill even a McMansion.

It looks like a definite step forward .. but will it really begin to mature until the manufacturers agree on a standard?
