Dell L400 notebook hanging at welcome

Running XP Pro, this unit goes quickly through POST but hangs at the Welcome screen sometimes, what can I do to move forward or prevent this?

Sometimes? or all the time? If sometimes, that's going to be difficult. if it's all the time, try Safe Mode. If it works in Safe Mode, then it's something in the startup. Uncheck items in msconfig/startup until you find the culprit.

I had suspected the startup initially but this is not happening everytime after further checking, sometimes it goes immediately to windows other times, it hangs for 10 minutes.

Well if it's not a startup item, I'd go for a chkdsk /r.

BTW-Is this the lappy that you just installed XP on?

No, that one was a C840, this is an L400 but I also loaded XP pro on this new drive.
