Well this week (Wed 10/14)we tipped the scales again and it gave everyone fresh hope the chatroom can work.
I am not going to summarize it except to say it was an exceptional night with up to 14 users onboard and many outstanding discussions, but most especially on the subjects of pc repair.
I actually walked away with the Hiren's Boot disk qldit reminded me of when we got into it over whether or not HDD Regenerator can repair a completely dead hard drive, and that tool which is a $60 retail, is free on the that boot disk and I had downloaded it 6 months ago while on another Paltalk chat, and never burned it to disk.
Later on this week I used it to clean a pc that had no Control panel so no way to remove malware programs. Using this disk I was able to scan for virus and spyware and clean it enough to boot into Windows and remove Norton and MacAfee dead av installs that were further killing the system, as well as download and run SAS and Nod32 online scan. The Hirens disk makes a Linux window which then offers you about 80 programs useful in getting back into Windows.
We also helped a wayward user with sound problems and handled a few other issues as well but what those of you who have never come, otr have not come for a while have forgotten or never knew, we had that night which was a lively discussion of what brings us all together and that is computers.
We also talked about a few Linux OS and shared experiences briefly on installs and live-cd running.
All in all a great night and I am sure we can build on that discussion of repairs this week in light of Seth's great contribution this week in KH with the XP console download that allows use of various programs inside a dead Windows OS with component damage.
I would love to see some of the other working techs and users join us this week in discussing more about actual recovery of virus and spyware ridden pc's! but if you don't well, your Loss!!!!
