Good Day Everyone, well that was a really nice session, the turnout was excellent.

Discussion centered initially on back-up and imaging programs which was an excellent learning experience.

Other subjects mentioned was that W-98 appears to no longer work on paltalk. (shame)
Edit, this information has been found innacurate, W98 series still functions on PT OK.

One fellow arrived with a Mic problem that had bad background hum and Rich took care of assisting him to successfully fix the problem. High tech instruction at it's best.
(The fellow went off happy that his mic system no longer worked at all!! )

Actually Lexmark had the fix for that mic problem but didn't have a mic so was trying to text info which was unseen. This shows the value of having a mic, I do hope he has one at the next session, I suspect this fellow has hidden talents!

Dee brought up some interesting questions about virus protection schemes and was suitably misdirected and also went away happy. She was going to try the Avira program, this is really a top-shelf kind of program, it will be interesting to see what she might have to say about it if she doesn't suddenly travel to far-off places!

Momma was once again charming but had to leave with some pithy excuse once again, oddly this coincided with the soapy start time that she never misses.

Donna was present and typed a lot of rubbish about on of her friends in KH, certainly looks like she has a crush on him. (watch out Seth, it may be you!)

Cindy once again showed her incredible superior female knowledge in most technical subjects mentioned. (I suspect she must be being directed by her husband, a girl couldn't be that smart) Her computer must have overheated during the session from that excess brain energy but she had a reserve unit that was thankfully online after a brief absence.

Annie made a brief appearance but must have been booted by PT, it seemed several people were having PT momentts.

Malware was mentioned and it should be understood that this covers Antivirus, adware and spyware programs, including trojans and worms.
This created discussion about different detecting program qualities and "Malwarebytes" was also mentioned. So the scans needed to inspect systems are a little more complex than one might expect.

Cindy successfully cleared the "Rumpdumpalump" malware from her computer but had to edit the registry to accomplish that. (Registry editing is pretty heavy stuff, her husband probably showed her what to do!)

Dan's Mic was much clearer I suspect he has improved the nut in front of the mic, but he was easily heard and understood for a change! Don't know if that is good or bad!
Chances are he may have had a bath and cleaned himself up a bit.= cleaner sound.

SATA hard drive detection in older MB systems was mentioned where the RAID drivers needed to be loaded from and using a floppy, whereas the newer boards have SATA in the BIOS. We forgot to mention "drive mirroring" but I am sure everyone is aware of that as a real time inherent ability in some of these systems using two drives.

The power of Linux systems to see into windows drives was mentioned and abilities to see and steal files off non-bootable windows drives was covered.
Certainly good for any covert activity.

The attributes of why Firewire was so much better than USB was covered, but that was by Rich, so treat that info accordingly! (USB is probably 100 times better)

For something really interesting have a look at this..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_CSRoA0MkA&feature=related
Watch the complete thing and just consider the possibilities for general use, certainly some food for thought here! I think granny's grandmother could use that system!

John's computer that Rich and Dan helped build still appears to be operating, probably because it rarely gets turned on. But John was happy even though he isn't aware the terrible duo pinched his motherboard manual and disks.

The targetted discussion points were briefly covered and the word Linux was mentioned 23 times so this new operating system is really becoming popular.

June, Vivienne and PL were conspicuous by there absence. Would these absconders please produce certified notes otherwise penalties may apply!
No chocolate for a week could be a light penalty and if they do it again no alcohol next!

Donna had no new information on that "rumpadumpalump" malware but further info is pending.

MS sent a confidential type email probably to every email address in the world, it seems everyone received it, it read in part :
"You have been chosen to represent your organization with this survey, therefore we kindly request that you do not forward this invitation.
Thank you for your time, and thank you for doing business with Microsoft."

This appeared to be slightly ridiculous, why would they say such a stupid thing!
Being a Linux adherent I answered the questions appropriately!

The replies most likely all go straight to a rubbish bin in the MS system anyway!

There were quite a few other fellows at the session but not much discussion originated from them, I think the girls took the floor!
Gentlemen please have a mic and let's put these females in their proper place!!

That mic of N3's certainly has good quality! (he arrived late by the way!!!)

So all up it was an enjoyable session and thoroughly interesting with technical stuff.

When I left Dan was trying to chat allheart up!! We will learn more as to what eventuated next week! (this is better than days of our lives!)

A bit like when Leonardo Da Vinci became the first sailor to circumnavigate the globe in his ship called the "Golden Hind"

Edit. A most interesting thing happened, the session wound down and I left, but for one reason or another returned some hours later and found the room still open and a young lady with a computer that wouldn't boot.
Cindy and Cdngirl were helping her progressively sort out her problem, I can tell you that working with Cindy and CDNgrl is like going to heaven!!

The problem computer was expertly analysed and a method of repair effected without the aid of any disks, I can only say that I was "gobsmacked" these two highly proffessional ladies very cleverly determined a method of accessing a restore partition activation and wonderously the dead machine was resuscitated, various processes were carried out and the end product was a perfectly serviceable machine.
Suitable malware protection was obtained and loaded with a newbie being given the best care!
The grateful owner's name was Jen and she will shortly be seen in KH, so prepare a warm welcome for her, she did really well.

As far as the exercise went it was truly a delight to witness in such delightful company.

Other problems were also posed by others entering the site during the period and once again the cordial nature of the assistance given, excelled any experience I have previously had online. These girls are something else!

You might ask what time the chat session actually finished, well I can say it was after 0400 hrs USEST

This would have to be a record session length and a real pleasure, time slipped by without realising it and at the finish there were still seven or so people in the room that had probably also had a marvellous experience.

A lot of very interesting subjects were discussed at length. I didn't want to leave! I can only say WOW!!

Cdngrl really makes a nice cup of tea and we had a tea-break along the way.

Cheers and Thankyou Everyone.

Lawrence.

Hilarious, Lawrence- said fellow is yours truly. truth of the matter is I found kangaroo hairs on the mic. "Made in Australia" was stamped on the bottom of the mic. Besides, after hearing Dan's tin can, it was time to put my $5 radio shack mic away.

You shoulda been with us back in the day on our old forum with Al Dom blabbing the merits of 98 sp1 and Blind Guy bringing all his female friends into Paltalk for tech support. I miss Blind Guy's presence. I sure hope he's alive and well in Conshohocken- he's probably spending too much time in Cracker Barrel ;) (that's where he sent me after I went out to pick up a printer he donated to my classroom).

btw, tell us what you really think about PuppyLinux. Perhaps you could make another 600 suggestions for Cindy to use it to access bad Windows hd's.

On a serious note, how did Cindy get her hd to stay booted long enough to edit registry? wasn't screen going black on her after a few minutes?

Dale, Having JUST NOW closed Paltalk, I have only, enough energy to respond to the "serious note"
On a serious note, how did Cindy get her hd to stay booted long enough to edit registry? wasn't screen going black on her after a few minutes?
My laptop was barely harmed, JT's grandaughter's notebook had the registry editing done. JT's machine was the :flicker, flacker, got a sneak peek at registry, (a peek was enough) and stopped dead in my tracks, in amazement. It's still a mystery to me where his security and protection disappeared to, his grandson isn't talking! As for everything else, both you as well as Lawrence, I laughed so hard my head ouch went away! As suspected everyone showed after some of you left. Names have not been mentioned in the likely event that blackmail remains a possibility!:D

Good Evening Dale, I was very pleased to meet you even though Rich had cleverely "gagged" you there! By the way after you left your more embarrassing moments were related by Rich and really shocked the entire room! It appears he had known you previously!

With your mic I would suggest the shielded wire is damaged most likely at the entry point to the earpiece if it is a boom mic headset. I usually cut the wire at that point and re terminate it
after dismantling the earpiece housing. Generally there is a small retaining clip to stop the lead pulling at that point and it causes the shielded wire to sever at that point.
I doub't you will find "made in Australia" on any product, if you do you will likely find it is superimposed over "made in China"!

Oh, by the way Puppy linux is written by an Australian fellow and is probably one of the fastest operating systems around, you must give it a try.
In many cases the selected program is open virtually before the mouse button is released.

I would have loved to have been present with you fellows in the past, I could have chaperoned you and kept you all on the "straight and narrow"!

Looking forward to our next session.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Sorry about that, guys and gals. I need to get a wireless laptop so that, when
necessary, I can recline while using the computer. I have a good chair, but
it does not solve the problem. At times, I can't sit or stand for even short
periods of time. I have to lie down or walk. Taking a nap yesterday afternoon
didn't work .. :frown:

Rest assured, the sound of Lawrence's sexy voice does not trigger this ... it
can happen any time, even when I let my guard down and am exposed to
George W. Bush's gobblygook, live on TV/radio and even in print ..

Thanks for the summary and laughs, Lawrence. You wisely did not include
any of the ungentlemanly things you had to say about me .... I did listen on
and off during soap opera commercials (via computer speakers), while
snuggled on my recliner in the living room ..

Any chance we can have the chatroom hours changed to start at 9 am US EST?
I'm in better shape then .. :D

Rich replied:
Maybe when we get the George Bush Recession Prevention checks we can
all quit our jobs and run Paltalk in the AM?

Lexmarks admonished: whats your problem shes joking.

Rich and I never know when to take each other's comments seriously. I
don't blame him, especially after my suggestion for a flashing green light
on the forum to indicate the chatroom is open .. ;)

Thankfully neither Rich nor I are heads of state - we'd start World War III

DSTM, I originally suggested a red light (closed) and a green light (open) for
the chatroom. The flashing green was an afterthought.

Sometimes some of my half-serious, off the wall suggestions make sense?

Maybe rather than have his distortions of everything I do or say dispersed throughout the report, we should devote the first half hour of the session for him to do a stand up routine of everything I have done or said in the last 6 months?

03-13-2008, 07:28 PM
Good Morning everyone, no, the report is pure fact all the way! Fair Dinkum stuff!!

By the way W-98 has no problem operating in Paltalk, the information about that appears to be erroneous.

Rich is peeved because he probably still has your motherboard manual John, by the way did you do an inventory check of your house after that pair left! I would be worried!

And of course Leonardo Da Vinci's ship that he became the first sailor to circum-navigate the globe in wasn't called the "Golden Hind" it was called "Mary Rose" and no one picked up on that one!!

The airplane tickets will be printed as soon as a get some new ink for my printer and suitable paper to replicate the process.

And Momma I think your idea of a flashing light is fabulous, actually an embedded sound could also be added.

Cheers, Lawrence.

Good Evening John, that wouldn't work, we need some "meat" to work with! LOL!

You know, to work into shape to make it interesting!

As it is we have some beasts like Rich, Dan and and yourself and we have some beauties which need no intros. So it is a great mixture.

Good Morning Cindy, that session was absolutely magic, but I am positive it had nothing to do with my presence, it was the proffessional way that you girls handled the problems and discussed all the reasoning and rationality, and your instructions were so cool and clear, so that was part of the magic.

The intermittent spontaneous responses from some of that audience was also interesting, it is most likely they realised there were no intimidtory influences present and that allowed a better evolvement of positive considered collective thought. I like to think of this as parallel thinking.

That audience was in absolute awe! (stunned mullets!)

By the way, this is the concept on which Linux systems are based, except everyone globally is involved, all ideas are exchanged and freely used, so it is an incredible force.

BTW, did Jen join our numbers yet?

I would expect she may tell others of her experience, because quite obviously none of her immediate friends had helped her, so it could be expected there may be a new face or two at the next session.

I do hope CDNGrl is present again!! (drool drool!)

Cheers, Lawrence.

It must be Dale's influence!

Did you get your mic fixed old chap!

I do hope you give Rich a serve for some of those remarks he made about you on PT after you left!

Any you sticking up for him after all that is amazing!

Look forward to seeing you on PT, and this time Rich is probably going to "nobble" your computer! So be wary! LOL!

I can't wait to be abused by you on PT!

Yo, Adrian-er, Lawrence, ya called me out, so I'm gonna give ya some straight Philuphia talk- a little cheesesteak wid. I'm much more of a gwon'backer and a Sou'Philly kinda guy, who likes to go downahsore rather than travel across the Delaware Oean. In fact, I've never left Uncle Sam's pod- but bein a teacher I figgered I'd learn the others on this forum a bit of foreign language- and there is nothing more foreign to us than King George talk. I'm really not that eddycated 'bout 'Stralia- I just know a few phrases, since da Outback Steakhouse is my favorite place to eat out (although nothin' beats homemade spaghetti and gravy, or Scrapple and eggs, or a Tastycake, or a soft pretzel, or a bratwurts w/ saurkraut, or a DiNic's Roast Pork sandwich, or Ernie's two-foot special, or a Carmen's corned beef special on whole wheat roll, or Chickie's and Pete's buffalo wings, or sausage w/peppers and onions, or Mr Softy's in summertime, or strawberries 3 lbs for a dollar from the huckster in the box truck squeezin thru the sidestreet, and 34 other neat food items from our culture in the Birthplace of Liberty- ya ain't lived till ya spent a few years here).

So, my favorite crow eater, try not to get your daks in a twist or spit the dummy as our cultures blend and we enjoy our time on this forum.

Lawrence, if Rich really did tell about the time the toilet paper was stuck to my loafers, that's quite all right. G'day Dale gee you sure know your "Strine" there.
And yes Adrianna was cheesecake from one of the TV gameshows here, all the blokes used to watch that show just to "perv" on Adrianna, you certainly don't have "duff gen" there.

In this state we are referred to as "Banana Benders" or "Cane Toads" the "Crow Eaters" are another state.

And yes I have spent a fair amount of really enjoyable time over in your place on several occasions, and toured over a lot of areas there, made a mistake out behind LAX on a hill that said 28 miles down hill, turned the ignition off in a big Pontiac and decided to coast all the way down, got a bit quick, so tried the brakes and steering! Wow that was an exciting few minutes drive!

By the way that "dunny paper" hangin out of your daks wasn't the one I found most interesting, it was one of the others, you might relate a few more as I think you could tell them better than Rich's effort! LOL! By the way, that Dan fellow was splitting his sides laughing, so I would give him a "serve" too if I were you!

As for tweaking Rich's nose, I think that would require something bigger than a D-10, that is some "hooter" he has!

Looking forward to you having fixed that mic there!

I would have loved to have had you as a teacher in one of my old classes, I might have introduced you to "Fairy Powder" touch sensitive mixture of sulphur, carbon and another little component, got one of our teachers really nicely, and got him again by emptying several cartridge cases into his ash tray, he had this unique way of always stubbing his cigarette into it! We gave him a nickname of "hairless" after that! LOL!

Lawrence, my man, here's some straightforward American English: Dan and Rich are much too loyal to a KH member to stab him in the back when he's not around to defend himself. Scout's honor. These old pals from the days of yore (when upgrading to Win98 was the most popular tech support answer on our favorite call in radio show) are tried and true.

Now, on the open forum here or when one is present in the Paltalk chatroom, it's like being at the family dinner table: all bets are off and each of us is fair game. Just not behind each other's backs. :gossip: Honest to goodness, I'm gob-smacked that a tall poppy like you wouldn't know better than to try to stir up the tinny with such an ankle biter approach. :faint: You aren't within Cooie on your efforts. :D I'd be stoked to have you don your trackies and jine us on the high level of trust. :grouphug: Now, there's my American zack (inflation ya know- two cents doesn't cut it anymore).

Good Morning Dale, gee you come across as an honourable type there, you must have some Australian blood somewhere in you family genetic history! LOL!

I must admit I did detect an element of doubt was present there!

Actually it is quite an interesting aspect of culture differences, here it is referred to as "taking the mickey out of someone" and is actually a warped kind of flattery and endearment.

If someone were to ask your closest friend for a description of you, the most disreputable reply would equate to mean the actual opposite, so if the answer were " he is the laziest, good for nothing, beer swilling pig"! you would equate that to mean "he is a nice guy"!

Similarly the statement "he is a nice fellow, for a Kiwi" would be qualified by the term "Kiwi" and would mean the exact opposite.

Now you will also notice that you people over there also use this kind of language with hidden meaning, for example
"Lawrence, have you ever considered running for political office? Shame
you aren't a native-born U.S. citizen. We could use another presidential
candidate right now and a few laughs"

Now this is interesting, because it can have the meaning literally or also infer that your presidential hopefuls are not very bright! LOL!

Typically if a fellow had red hair, his nickname would undoubtedly be "Bluey".

This also has meaning in areas like my wifes description of me "A lazy good for nothing bum"! Now she earnestly believes this to be correct and often describes me as this to my friends, what she doesn't realise is that this is accepted as praise by them. She was not born here and I met her overseas, so you will appreciate my actual chuckling when she says these kinds of things.

Another situation happened yesterday with the formula 1 car races here in Melbourne, these race cars ran on a track that was 51 deg C and the air temp was 35 degs C, a lot of the cars died during the race because of the heat, but that will likely be mentioned in future as the race was run in "freezing" conditions.

So now if you apply this intel to the term that you were the subject of conversation you might appreciate that wasn't the case and that it was a simple fishing trip! LOL!
So this is what we refer to as "taking the mickey out of someone"!

Now if we follow on from that you might realise that your answer really showed a circumstance that "you were not really sure" and your honour took over and came to the fore. So that really is a commendable trait. My compliments!

You might also appreciate that abuse is actually praise.

So my friend everything is in the tone of voice and description, and things are not always as they seem.

You might also notice that these accounts are attracting notoriety, so shall we choose weapons and duel on Paltalk this week?

By the way you might put forward a few suggestions for discussion points.

I like your style!

Good Evening Cindy, Absolutely my dear! LOL!

Why is it that the sheilas on this site are so much more switched on than the blokes?

Cheers, Lawrence.

Lawrence,
Upon my next cameo on Paltalk, we'll leave this bodgy talk behind and discuss the source code in PuppyLinux, ok?

Good Morning All, you are showing your age Dale with words like "bodgy" gee that is a term that almost disappeared, still commonly used here in the trades to describe "Bodgy Tradesmen" as rough, improper kinds of operators but that is about all.

Originally it referred to a male person with slicked hair, and probably having a knife or such, probably wearing a "zoot" suit with tightly "pegged" pants, virtually a description of a "hood"!
You might enlighten what a "widgie" is now! LOL!

I have a lot of source code here but regrettably don't know how to manipulate it. I don't even know how to compile a kernel!

How about something simple like "Charles Law on the hypotenuse in isosceles triangles"

What is the bet the girls will know about this one!

Cheers, Lawrence.
