I recently installed AVG8 and in the warnings section there are 190 entries. I just looked in there and there are approximately 22 Trojans and a few hijackers along with some down loaders i believe. I don't know how to use this program fully yet and i would like to know what to do about this. Is there a way to make a copy of the warnings log so i can post it here? Should i send these warnings to the virus vault? I'm very confused about this.

*Note...I uninstalled spywareblaster because i didn't like the conflicts that it and AVG were having but i do have the free version of SAS. Thanks in advance for the help with this. :)

They are not from spywareblaster because i uninstalled it last night. At least i don't see how they could be those entries if the program no longer exists on my PC. As far as host files i do have MVP host files. Can you elaborate on what exactly is happening here? I'm so confused!

No threats were found and my virus vault is empty. I just do not have a grasp on this new AVG yet so i don't know what im dealing with here. :frown:

This is a known issue with AVG8, Grisoft know about the issue and are working to fix it with the next major update to the software.

quote from an email received by someone from Grisoft

We are currently working on solution for this. It will be added into
next major program update of AVG.

We are sorry for this inconvenience. Please ignore the warnings in AVG
tests.

It really is not an infection. Please see our pages:
http://www.avg.com/faq?num=1198

from Grisoft FAQ support
Infection detected in "ActiveX Compatibility" registry key (javascript: faqshow(1198,7);)

An "ActiveX Compatibility" registry key is a result of the "Immunize" function included in some anti-spyware programs (e.g.: "Spybot search & destroy", "Spyware blaster",...)

The key contains the same registry entries as the actual threats, thus preventing them from working correctly. Some anti-spyware programs use this method to prevent launching of the malware. Unfortunately, these parts are still detected by AVG signatures and that is why AVG marks them as infected.

To assure protection provided by AVG against these threats, it is not possible to remove such signatures from AVG virus bases.
Because of this, "Immunize" function included in above mentioned softwares is NOT compatible with AVG products.

Yet more False positives from AVG

If AVG had found any threats they would be in the virus vault so stop worrying please

a host file does the same thing as spywareblaster so those entries are normal

DeeDee, add all those warnings about ActiveX entires to AVG's ignore list (if there is such a thing) they are harmless legitimate registry entries.

I stopped using AVG a few years back because of its constant false positives that it found

Donna i'm not worrying about it because i know that even if they weren't false positives we would be able to get rid of them. I am just not understanding how this program works yet and am seriously considering switching my AV to Alvira if these issues don't get fixed soon.

Hi Jack! I don't even see an ignore list in this thing lol. What is everyones opinion on Alvira?

If you mean Avira (http://www.free-av.com/) I find it works great - no problems and easy to use. The updates seem to take much longer than AVG though, but that's a minor thing I guess.

Just ignore the warnings yourself then, maybe the issue will be fixed with the next update file for AVG8.
In short dont worry, its a problem with AVG's detection database blah blah blah, it is NOT a problem with your system. You are NOT infected.

AVG is well known for its FPs, one reason I dont recommend it as these FPs send the average home user into a tizzy fit, worrying about their PC's security etc, just like you have.

Now , go and put the kettle on and forget about it... Tea, 3 sugars please :D

I use Avast

Well in the 2 years that i had AVG 7.5 i never had a FP. And I'm not in a tizzy fit as you put it which by the way is offensive to me because i am not your average home user. My issue is not understanding exactly how AVG8 works. The interface is totally different than its predecessor. I only asked a simple question of not understanding why Trojans and down loaders were in the warnings as possible threats. :)

More on the AVG8 issue HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=143321&st=0&gopid=805267&#entry805267)
Grisoft have known about it for over a month!!!!! and people are still having troubles??
from reading, it would appear to me that Grisoft are NOT that bothered about it to offer an acceptable solution.

I know what I'd be doing if I were an AVG8 user.

For the record :)

1. they are warnings
2 they are not threats

All new products have teething troubles. if you dont like it DeeDee try something else

You can always go back to it when they have ironed out the wrinkles:)

Thank you Donna you answered my question. I just didn't understand why it would state that they were possible threats. Now i understand that they are just bugs that need to be ironed out. :)

Hello DeeDee
I been using AntiVir for about 4 years and to me its about the best "Free" antivirus program out there. Click "Download the Latest Version 21.28MB (http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/) in the green column and save your desktop. Right click the AntiVir setup.exe icon on your desktop and follow the prompts to install.

Please Note:
You'll see a BuyMe/Upgrade popup during definitions update and if your like me, just ignore it and click OK to close it. A wery wery wery small nonsense price for the best "FREE" antivirus out there.

Note: Give a try and if you dont like you can go back to AVG, make sure you have only antivirus program running at a time.:)

Jack i do believe that we have hit a language barrier because of our different cultures. Where I'm from the phrase tizzy fit is offensive. Concerned would have been more appropriate. :)

Tea kettle is on and lunch was eaten in between postings. :D

Thank you for the link. I will check it out and compare it to my other options. I think i will start a poll (if this forum has that option) on what the best free anti virus is nowadays. :)

Goku
05-29-2008, 12:03 PM
Well, the poll would be heavily leaned toward three major contenders:

Avira AntiVir
Avast
AVG

So I think you might just include these three options in the poll and the fourth labeled 'Others'. By the way, KH does have the option to conduct polls. Look at the home page for one. :)

My father almost landed in jail for yelling at his landlady. What was not
offensive in his Italian dialect was grossly offensive and obscene in his
landlady's dialect.

Misunderstandings like that have started wars. I'm glad that you guys have
cleared that up and hopefully are at peace .. :D
