Following up on a past post: I had a Windows XP Home machine that got stuck at the Windows is Starting screen while starting, even in Safe Mode. I ended up doing a Repair install which got it running, but still hangs for about 90 seconds at Windows is Starting, even in Safe Mode. Seems like a long time. I'm going to replace the cable and see what happens.

Have you removed everything from startup? Cut back all hardware to basics with 1 ram stick, 1 hard drive, psu, and all pci cards and drives out. If it runs ok, then slowly add back until you findthe culprit.

Rich - thanks - that's pretty much what I did. This morning, I pulled the PCI modem and NIC. Additionally, I replaced the cable to the hard drive. (I had already reseated RAM). The thing came up nicely. Then I put it back the way it was, one item at a time and it's still running nicely.

Reseating either the PCI cards for hd cable did the trick.

thanks

Tony,
I'm pretty sure there is a way to find out what's causing the thing to
hang by looking at certain *.log files or by using the Even Viewer under
Administrative Tools in CP.

Sometimes I do a file search on.. *.log
and sort by Time/Date. Then I read some of the log files that
were created at the time of retarting WinXP. They are difficult to
interpret but can offer clues as to what's going on.
