Followup to original post.
Asus Tech Support ... once you get through the phone menu... is pretty darned good!
Tech says system clock problem is probably a bad capacitor on the mobo, sent me to RMA dept. Took just a few minutes to register an RMA.
Looks like a replacement mobo will be on the way shortly.
Oh well, got the whole thing torn apart anyway, may as well replace the mobo.
