Well. still working on daughter's machine which is back up and running.

Not to go through this debacle again, I decided to get her an external backup drive. 200g Maxtor One Touch on sale at Staples for $113 - a few store coupons = <$100.

Drive works great, plug in, turn on and it was recognized right away. It does confuse the BIOS by putting itself as the first boot device, which is a mobo issue.
File copy and NTbackups work fine on it.

Anyway ...
It comes with Dantz Retrospect backup software.
The install version uses .net 1.1
Of course, Windows updated to 2.0
Install the software and try to run it and it just sits there.
Uninstall, re-install a few times....
Gave up and called their Tech Support.
Nice people! Real humans to answer the phone and quick too!
Got a tech who immediately figures out that version won't work with .Net 2.0, takes me to an update download version.
Still no go.
Try non .Net ver 6.0 off the cd ... buried in case you want to use the older version but at least included.
Install that.
Still won't work right.

Gave up after fighting with it all afternoon.
I'll run the dtnet.fix tomorrow and give the updated version one more try.

Doug, if you have Acronis then don't even bother with Dantz Retrospect .
I tried it once and didn't care for it too much. It required that I enter
a long key code even after it was already installed and I tried to
run direct off the CD. It just left a bad impression on me.

Maybe someone else here can offer a second opinion if
they gave it more of a chance than I did. I much prefer
Acronis.

Doug,

Can't help you with Dantz - BUT the USB external hard drive boot can be stopped by going into the BIOS and disabling (or removing) USB from the BOOT Device option.

I've used Retrospect for the Mac for years. Tech support has been quick to answer the phone and good. The product is a bit difficult to use compared to Acronis' True Image. I'm having problems with Acronis' True Image and Disk Director. Sent Acronis an email today and haven't heard back from them.
