View Full Version : Possible Spyware!!!
Tried "Windows Defender Beta 2" for the first time & it stated i have a "Possible Hosts File Hijack" in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
Alert level is: Medium. The action in Windows Defender tells me to "Ignore" the above alert. I scanned my computer using NOD32 & some online virus scanners & a multitude of online spyware programs & they all state everything is clean. Any suggestions?

hosts file is used to store IP of common sites. Windows can retrieve the IP from hosts rather than through DNS lookup.
This can be handy when the DNS servers are slow to respond,
I use the hosts file for site blocking with a re-direct
to bring up the "page not found" screen.
You can obtain a list of common adware/spamware and garbage sites and put them in there ie:
127.0.0.1 adimg.egroups.com
127.0.0.1 admedia.xoom.com
127.0.0.1 adpick.switchboard.com
127.0.0.1 adremote.pathfinder.com
127.0.0.1 adres.internet.com
127.0.0.1 ads.adflight.com
127.0.0.1 ads.admaximize.com
127.0.0.1 ads.beguide.net
127.0.0.1 ads.bfast.com
127.0.0.1 ads.clickagents.com
127.0.0.1 ads.clickhouse.com
+ several hundred more!
Open the hosts file in Notepad and see what it contains.
You may have a re-direct of a known site that is sending you someplace else ie: an entry for Excite.com with an IP that does not match the correct one.
Delete any suspicious entries.
