I find myself with an old problem I never solved but
resolved by moving the hardware. I have a 17" Dell monitor that has USB ports on the side which I have found to be really convenient. When I first purchased this monitor I set it up on my secondary computer and found that the USB ports wouldn't work. I had external USB ports so I wasn't worried about it. In the mean time I changed the monitor over to my Main computer and found that everything worked fine. I could use the monitors USB ports for my IPOD and had no problems. Since I just purchased a 19" Dell monitor I moved the 17" back to the secondary computer and was again faced with the USB ports not working. Since I'm using the same cable on both monitors and I removed the external that worked and installed the cable for the monitor and it sill doesn't work
I don't know where to go next. The uSB port works because I installed a camera to see if it would be recognized and everything worked fine. This is a confusing problem.

Larry,
Actually from your post I fisrt learned those ports were there in the monitor and have used them ever since. And you know you need a cable to run from the monitor to usb port. Have you gone into the bios to be certain all the usb ports are enabled and I would not leave out "legacy usb keyboard" etc as I have seen that effect other things on usb. I had to allow "legacy usb mouse" on this one to get my laser mouse to run off those ports in the monitor is why I am saying this.

Rich,
I know about the cable because I'm using the same one that I used on my main computer. In fact I didn't even disconnect it from the monitor. I will check on the USB
settings but I'm using the same USB ports on the computer that work with other things, camera, usb external devices. But I will take another look at the settings in the bios in case I missed something.

Like I said "You learn something everyday".
I went into the bios and turned everything that said USB that wasn't already enabled to enabled. Tried the USB port with no success. I tried re-installing the motherboard USB drivers and that still didn't help. Decided that I would live with it but thought I'd go back in the bios and shut down what I earlier enabled. While there I noticed it said ON-Chip USB and this had been enabled all the time. I just wondered what would happen if I would shut down the On-Chip USB and just used the drivers that I installed. When I restarted it nothing happened until I plugged in the USB device and it was instantly recognized. So by turning the On-Chip USB Off it allowed the ports to work. I'm just glad they work.

very interesting. and really shows what patience and trial and error does (other than dig a deeper whole occasionally):D

That's the neat thing about having total restore capability. It allows you to operate with "no fear" and "boldly go where no one has gone before", knowing you can be back to where you left off in 8 minutes after toatlly trashing your entire OS!

caveat: image restore does not affect bios tweaks like Casey made, does it? since bios doesn't reside on hd.

Well here is the update. It seemed that shutting down
ON-Chip USB but it also stopped me from having any
USB 2.0 at all. Whenever I connected a USB device I was told the device can run faster if connected to a USB2.0 port. Now on this MB certain ports are 2.0 and others are
not. I plugged the monitor into the 2.0 slots but still didn't have the performance. After downloading the drivers again and trying all kind of different ways I went back into the bios because I remembered seeing the 2.0 drivers installed at one point. I found out that the ON-Chip USB was what controlled the 2.0 and when I shut that down it allowed the 1.1 to take over and the hub would work. But then I didn't have 2.0 no where on the computer. I finally ENABLED ON-Chip USB and went into System/hardware and updated the driver to one I downloaded and it finally went in. It is working like it is suppose to, now. It was a fight but I still learned a little.

OK so the driver you downloaded was what from where? Or did you simply update the usb controller driver within the system?

I was trying to install the controller driver from the Motherboard CD without any success. I downloaded the controller driver from Chaintech web site and used that to update the driver in system/hardware/deviceManager/universalserialbuscontroller/ALI PCI to USB openhost controller.
I believe the 2.0 driver was corrupted and by shutting off the ON - Chip USB in the bios that brought the 1.1 controller back and everything worked off that. Then when I saw I wasn't getting any 2.0 USB and checked to see that the controller for 2.0 wasn't installed I couldn't get it installed until I enabled the On-Chip USB again. I then finally got a glimmer of an idea of what was going on and did get the controller driver installed. It's working fine now..
