Five months ago, client made a restore of system per instructions which consisted of 11 CD disks.
Major infection yesterday and I come to the rescue with the restore.
Restore is self booting and prompts for each disk, but completes in 4 disks at 100%.
What do you think the other disks are for? Could there be a hidden partition that took the restore the rest of the way and just in case that got clobbered, the other disks kick in?
It was late and I was tired to explore further, but what do you think or know?

Have you browsed the contents of the remaining 7 disks, Fred?

Fred,
You are stating that you restored - most likely just the OS files were restored and the additional cd's were for software.
Remember the CD you get with Microsoft is compressed files - and Sony probably stored the extracted files on the cd's so as to be able to write them back to the hard drive in their original locations.
Did you notice if the service packs were retained?

Dan i think you missed Fred's point, and that is the client made the 11 cd's, n ot Sony. Sounds like the client was using Ghost or Acronis.
One thing that comes to mind right away is that I would bet the System restore would be copied, but not restored by image file, though that couldn't account for 7 cd's. But i wouldn't be surprised he copied a hidden partition though that would not restore back and Sony has such.
I noticed one time in making a n image file of a new Dell, the only place I could see the hidden partition was in Acronis, and if I had the time I was going to try to copy it and then restore it to see if i could.

Mystery solved.
I later recalled two restore options: 1) a full restore to C: (the default) and 2) custom (advanced). I was not thinking beyond the first option. I now know that the advance option allows a full restore to the C AND D partitions. That is what I figured: the D partition was hidden and I now see that the recovery was also accessible by pressing F10.
