A real collection of "true life" nightmares with computers....
Pay homage to the Gods of Blue Smoke or they will treat you harshly...
There are so many good ones in here, it's hard to pick a favorite.
I just know we have all violated one of the "rules" at least a few times.
Just how many times have you been unable to resist the urge to peek inside the case with the machine powered up? You just HAVE to plug in that fan you forgot or wiggle some wires... or ... you shut down the machine and are in the middle of swapping out a drive when you suddenly realize the mobo led is still glowing!!! Forgot to pull the power cord off the PSU!
I love the one about dropping a cup of coffee into the open case ... came real close to doing that!
How about the hard drive cage full of drives that fails to lock into the little clips and falls out bouncing off the mobo?
Oh yeah! Heat sinks do lock in cockeyed!
How about yanking on an IDE cable and having the whole plug rip out?
Ever spend the whole day figuring out you forgot to plug in a power connector?
How come the screen is black? Well, it does help to plug the monitor in...
What's your favorite "Oh,S$%*!"

Easiest way to kill a video card:
Connect both VGA cable and DVI cable to it at the same time. ;)
This actually happened to a member of another forum I frequent.

I think it was in 1995 I had a Compaq 133 P MMX with 16 meg ram. It took me an hour to get the courage to open case to install a card to run a scsi scanner. Scanner never ran right and I wound up returning it to Worst Buy later that day. In the door of that Compaq the modem attached to a plug and in taking the side off, I disconnected the modem and lost internet for 2 days until I figured out how to put the side back correctly. Based on that negative experience I then paid a guy $600 to up my cpu from 133 to 200 and the ram from 16 to 48. Having observed that, I felt like a total moron and decided nothing like that would ever happen again, and it didn't!
