I just purchased a 256 meg video card. it's an nvidia with DVI and tv out, but I wanted it for the DVI mostly.
Well I thought I'd better try it to see of it works before sending for the rebate. Now all my computers that I have hooked up are running XP and I just figured to see if it would boot. I got a long beep and a black screen. I removed it and reseated it but still got a long beep and a black screen. I then went to another computer and on that one I didn't even get the beep, just the black screen. Right now I have it boxed up and ready to return but thought maybe there is something I should be doing. I have installed many video cards without any problems but only a few in XP. This is using the DVI part of the card. I didn't even try the other part. Anybody with a suggestion before I return it?

Does it have its own external power connector????
Many of the newer, high end cards, have a MOLEX connector on them and get their power from a connector off the power rails.
Look at the back end of it for a 4 pin power connector.

Well It's to late now. I tried it in another computer and nothing . I read the book and it didn't say anything about a connector, Anyway I took it back.

Most of the cards 6200 and up have additional power adapters Larry, though I am not positive about agp cards. Without having you think I am picking at you though I also have to say EVGA are "lowend" anyway.

Now that it's mentioned I can't say for sure that it didn't have a connector. It was a 6200 EVGA 256 video card and it was AGP 8x. I looked at the card for any type of settings but if it did have a connection I missed it. This was a low end card and that doesn't bother me. I don't spend a fortune on video cards and I can look at photo's and movies all without any problems. I probably would have trouble with games but even the games I played ran okay.
It said the normal price was $99.99 and there was $60 in rebates. On the way home I was saying to myself that I really didn't need it as I have a couple of "low end" cards on the shelf. I even have a PCIe card that will soon go into a computer within the week. My first PCIe and Sata drive
in the same computer...Now I'm thinking of buying another one tomorrow just to see if it did have a connection. I know my grandson uses video cards that
you must connect to the Power supply but I never had to yet. Well Guess you really do learn something everyday.

Is this a special connection because the only thing that came in the box was a DVI/VGA connector and Svideo
cable with a CD. Oh well now you guys have me thinking.

Rich, Take a look at this card and see if you see anywhere to connect a power adapter to..

Do most of the PCIe cards have plugins or does that also depend on the range of the card?

Nope, the EVGA cards I have here in the shop have no extra molex connector. Wish I'd seen this post/question sooner.

I would say all PCI-e cards have the extra power connector. Some have a 4 pin like P4. Some have the molex connector.

When you installed yours, did you remove all instances from previous card before trying to install this one? I had to break the computer down to bare VGA to get these cards to work. :(

Thanks Photolady, I was starting to think I missed something. I got so desperate that I finally read the install directions. In the trouble shooting section of the book it said if you get a black screen it was either the AGP slot, Motherboard and last the video card. Since I had another video card that worked fine I didn't think it could be the motherboard or AGP slot.

I thought about taking the drivers for the video card out but I really didn't want to leave this card in the box I was trying it out in. In fact if it would have worked , just booted I was going to put it on the shelf for a future install. Maybe not deleting the old card was the reason but I thought it should have at least booted and I did try it in three computers. I guess you live and learn...

Only certain higher priced more powerful models such as 6800 and 7600 nvidias and some ATi as well.

PL I have Asus and Msi nvidia 6600 256 meg pci-express video cards with no extra molex plugs, so it isn't all.
