Cnet.com news - Dell has slashed prices to attempt to gain market share. But what they are missing is that it ain't the prices it is the QUALITY! The article shows that HP, Gateway, Toshiba are all in the same price range as Dell and they are making headways into the once "golden" egg of Dell.

Couldn't happen to a nicer company delivering garbage to the end users.

Well having worked on recent Gateways, they are "serious junk". Toshiba Laptops, once the best are hugging the toilet last 2 years, but personally I think HP, a company I have always loathed, is where it's at these days both in desktops and notebooks. And I put my $ where my mouth is. I can't help but wonder if their merger with Compaq wasn't a "master stroke".
Dell is probebly saving a fortune in unlicensed software would be my bet.

I remember looking at a Dell notebook a few years ago for $800 with 256 MB RAM, XP Home, 40 GB and some CPU I forgot. Now, there is a Dell dual-core notebook with 1 GB RAM for that much (on special). :dizzy: I'm still waiting until next summer to get one (for college), even if I see a great deal.

PI,
I have had 2 Dell notebooks, and one was worse than the next. Check out HP, as they know me here for hating HP products, but their notebooks rock!

I recently recommended an HP laptop to a former student, who loves it so far.

A relative in Italy bought an HP laptop identical to one recommended by Rich M. He loves it!

Thanks, I'll look into HP notebooks. Recently, whenever someone asked, I just told them to look at Dell & HP, but I guess Dell's quality is decreasing now along with the rest. :(

PI I doubt Dell ever made a good Notebook, while their desktops always had good hardware until they started trying for the $400 price range.

I know some people who like their Dell notebook (it's an XPS, not one of the cheaper ones). Dell just tries to cut corners to lower prices (a little too much now).

You may want to look at IBM / Lenovo also. I have had four Thinkpads in the last 12 years and have all positive comments. :thumb: Pricing has come down in the past year or so. The acquisition by Lenovo does not seem have impacted the overall quality of the hardware or support.

My $.02

Thanks, but I'm still waiting until somewhere around next summer before I go to college. I would like it to at least not be outdated before I start college.

When you get ready, trying looking at the manufacturer websites to see if they have an education section. About a year ago, a co-worker get a really great deal on a Thinkpad  on the IBM site for a young relative heading off to college. Just a thought.

PI I don't doubt that. It's like I know some folks who like Norton Antivirus!
