I hesitate to post this but I guess it's what I deserve. Anyway I'm getting checksum errors after a full power off on the new build. I already changed the battery and it didn't help. I must tell you this is a re-furbished Motherboard, which I have used before without any problems. I guess it was due to catch up with me. I really hate this because the machine runs cool and smooth and to return the board
will make me mad. It has an 11/05 bios but I cannot see any advantage to upgrade to a newer bios. Is there anything else that can cause this problem besides the battery. It's fine as long as I leave the board getting power, even if the computer is off. It only happens when I completely power down.

Checksum errors are not only associated with the battery but also from memory, and other components in your computer. Test your memory first. Easiest to do at the least. Check all cables are seated correctly and that the floppy cable is turned the correct way, red stripe inside. I've see this checksum myself which turned out to be a misoriented cable on floppy and/or the floppy drive was bad.

Thanks Photolady, would these problems cause the lost of settings in the cmos? I lose date/time and defaults are loaded after the power is off. But will look at the things you noted.

Disconnect all expansion cards and ide cables. Then reboot.
If you dont get the error, the problem is likely with a piece of hardware.
If you get the error, the problem is with the CMOS, BIOS, or motherboard component- try clearing CMOS, then "Load Setup Defaults".
If that doesnt work, might be corrupt bios- try flashing the bios.
If that doesnt work, RMA the board.

Thanks, I've already disconnected the floppy, changed the memory completely, updated the bios to the newest available and I also changed the battery twice. I keep coming back to the board because as long as it has power and I don't mean the computer running, just the green light on, it works okay and no errors. I only get the error when I turn off all power and then start it up. It just points to the motherboard and it just seems to run so smooth. The only thing I haven't done was disconnect the Sata drive,,,

Was there an IDE drive in the system originally?
Check to make sure that the SATA is in port 0 (zero) - I have found them in port 1 a lot of the times and that causes many issues.
On your SATA drive does it have the SATA power and Molex power connector? If you are using one - try the other for power. You should have a power adapter even if the power supply did not come with SATA power blade connector.

Well fellows, I didn't fool around as it's on it's way back to
Newegg. Maybe I'm wrong but everyone seems to be keying on that Checksum error. To me the big part was that it worked fine as long as it was not turned off. After being turned off and then started it never made it out of the bios because the setting were not there any longer.
I will tell you that I disconnected everything and still had the same problem. I really didn't want to send it back but they don't give you much time on re-furbished items and I didn't want to take a chance.

Larry,
I think you are right to do that because while there are all those explanations of other hardware possibilies, none of them would cause the settings to drop when you shut down. The only thing that could do that is the cmos battery.
That is what that Asus A8N-Sli was doingI sent back, and it can really make you crazy.

Refurb ... somebody's problem supposedly fixed ...
I'm into my second month of dealing with the clock problem on daughter's.
Sent it back RMA and they replaced a part and sent it back.
No fix.
Now going back again for replacement with a new mobo.
Way too many parts, traces, capacitors on a mobo to expect a complete repair that finds/fixes the problem.
Didn't get any arguments from Asus and their Tech Support, although real nice people, had no answers.
Getting a replacement is little consolation for all the time spent trying to troubleshoot it and fix it.
