Yeah, so I walk into STAPLES and go drectly to the counter where they
have the software. I ask 2 different sales people about the $49.99
Win XP Home Upgrade deal. They tell me they never heard of it.
Upon walking out, I pickup the newpaper specials at the door and
I find the AD for the $49.99 deal.

Ok, by now I'm running out of time. I go back the same sales clerks
and show them the AD. I pay the $100 for Win XP Home Upgrade
with intention of getting some kind of mail in rebate for $50. I get
home and there's nothing here to mail in.

Does anyone know how to make the claim for the $50 mail in rebate?
Any suggestions on how to process it so that I actually receive the money?

Pete,

You should have received a rebate form from staples.

But you can go to stapleseasyrebates.com or here
http://snipurl.com/l9ls . The rebate offer number is
06-46780 but you still will need the number at bottom of the rebate form. I believe the number is the same at the bottom of the receipt you received from Staples.
It is really easy as you don't have to send in anything.
Just go to the web site and follow directions, I had done it before so my name and address was already there. I just signed in and included the rebate id 06-46780 and the number at the bottom of the rebate form or at the bottom of the receipt. It's a seventeen digital number at the bottom of the receipt or rebate form. They both show the same number so you should be okay.. I can't say it any plainer and with the rebate id number and your receipt number you should be okay. Let me know how you make out and if you need any more help.
Good luck..

Don't understand why your staples didn't give you a rebate form..

Casey,
You explained it perfectly in the quote above. Thank you!
I went to the URL above and selected STORE PURCHASE.
Then I used the two numbers from my STAPLES receipt to complete
the online forms.

See, I was thinking I needed some kind of pre-printed coupon/form and
did not think to look at my receipts. All the info I needed was in my wallet
with my Staples receipt. I followed your directions above and submitted
it online.

Even the STAPLES flier was misleading because it said something about
it being a mail-in rebate and not a Staples Easy Rebate.

Anyway, thanks again!
I'm sure this post will help others to understand the STAPLES
rebate procedures.

Seems like a lot of work...I buy them on ebay for $60 all day long without any of that no gas and no sales tax!

Some also have statements like this:

This is an auction for a retail package of Windows XP home edition UPGRADE ,NEW on open box, as far as I know it has never been activated (or at least not by me), everything works fine, thanks for looking, good luck and BID, BID, BID!!!!

Why would I buy something like this?

Save gas could be one. BTW are you suggesting this is what I suggested you buy? There are probably 200 copies of this on eBay at any given time and you find this to prove some point or other? I mean personally jumping through hoops, like going to websites making copies of sales receipts, obtaining coupons, listing them to see if and when you ever get them back, is as odious to me as eBay obviously is to you. To each his own, right?
Oh and if it has been activated? Do it again as "hardware change" and Ms will pass you though with flying colors.

This was just one of the many for sale. I didn't say you recommended anything. One thing I did notice was many of the cheapest still had days to go on their bidding and there was no buy now option. I didn't go through the whole bunch as I just bought one and my daughter bought one. I have no problem with E-bay as I have bought there in the past and will in the future. It just scares me as I do have a friend that paid for a new computer that he never saw. He lost $1700 or $1800 and was told if hr filed a complain he would have to travel to the state(down south somewhere)where the guy supposedly was from. He declined and just took the loss. As for jumping through hoops, I guess you didn't read my message. It filled the form for me and all I typed in were two numbers. Sorry, I didn't have to copy anything because ,Staples gave me a copy of my receipt which ,I didn't need. I did stick that and the rebate form in my folder. But that didn't tire me out, even at my age...I like "to each his own"..

Larry,
I buy everything on eBay pretty much, but I don't buy expensive things there. I once bought the Nikon D100 camera there with 2 lenses from a guy in Canada for $1500 and held my breath. But he had over 100 feedback or I never wold have and it was all positive. Other than that I think my top buy was $395 for my HP Color Laser Printer. I check the feedback pretty carefully usuallly.

You da man when it comes to rebates and such but sometimes the first one into the fray, doesn't get the best possible deal is all by being too quick. But really, how would anyone be able to predict!

I wasn't mad at myself for getting XP from Staples and having a rebate, I was mad because other people saw what I posted and they had to use a rebate which now they wouldn't have to. What I do with rebates is use them as spending money. I allow myself so much money a month for my pleasure whatever it is. By sending for rebates I get the product I want at a cheaper price and since I pay with a credit card I don't have to pay anything until next month. When the rebates come back it means I don't have to take as much from my savings for spending money. Most months I don't have to withdraw anything. Like with Staples, by the time I get the bill from my credit card and pay it the rebate will be here.
