On the IE options panel | Temporary Internet Files | Settings, I have the automatic button set to check for newer versions of stored pages. However, when I go to view my just published website, I frequently have to hit the refresh button for changed pages in order to get the current version. Is there another settings that I should use. I did not want to select "every time I visit a page" and slow down surfing.

Clear stored cache on exit.
Then you can exit IE and open it again to view your changes.

Will I need to do this every time? I thought that this was the effect of the automatic setting.

No, just set IE to empty the cache on closing.
Close it, then open it again to see changes as it will fetch the new page when it opens.
Cache is only of value on a slow speed connection where the browser stores files from frequently loaded pages to save loading time. On broadband, you will never notice the difference.
