I have read much about Brazil using Ethanol instead of gas for vehicles. I just watched Dateline and 60 Minutes, which both aired programs about flex-fuel vehicles and moving from gas/oil to E85 (ethanol based) fuel. The news is just amazing. We could put the oil industry out of business if we converted to E85. Cars don't cost any more that run on E85. Ford and GM are already making flexfuel vehicles in Brazil and they are stilling like crazy. Four of every five cars sold in Brazil are flexfuel.
Every car sold in the US should be flexfuel. This should start right right away. If we started selling flexfuel cars today they could start using E85 when it becomes available at stations in the next few years. This is really a success in Brazil. They are independent from foreign oil now. This would relieve us from the hold from OPEC and take funds away from terrorists.
The sad thing is this won't happen because the oil industry will wipe out all chances of ethanol and flexfuel. The companies will just lower the price of gas to wipe out ethanol production. The governemment could mandate adding ethanol to gas to lessen use of oil overall. They could also mandate all vehicles to be flexfuel right away, but this won't happen either. Not with GW and his dunce hunting friend the VP. This isn't science fiction and is proven to work. The US will be left behind if it doesn't act and move to ethanol. It's being used in Brazil, Sweeden and one country after another. Wake up America!

You know what John I feel the same way about my two diesel Jetta's.
You cannot tell they are not gas engines, they get between 45-50 mpg, one is automatic BTW, and they are probably faster than most gas engine cars besides.
4 days after purchasing first one last year, I was driving down the road thinking to myself if they wanted to solve the problem, outlaw gasoline. Put a date and time on it, and do it.
Before I bought that I filled up my Maxima twice a week for about $32 each time(I shudder to think how much that would be today). Now I fill up my Jetta every 2 weeks for about $29. I saw my fuel bills cut about 50% and more when we got my wife one also.I look at it that one car is free and I still save a few $ on fuel besides.

It's just a shame. We could be liberated from the shackles of oil, but the oil companies will prevent this at all costs. Even if gas was mixed with a higher percentage of ethanol it would save millions of gallons of oil produced gas. The really ironic thing is the gas/oil companies use a mixture of about 10% ethanol to boost the octane rating of gas. Is this unreal??!!!
