Apparently my favorite hard drive mfgr has a problem with their sata2 hard drives and Nvidia nforce4 chipset, where they won't be accessible in XP.

Did you write the first comment on that page? ;)
Still, I guess not every product can be compatible with everything.

Goes back even further than that...
The change to SATA2 specs came just before the Nvidia chipset and when the mobos came out, there was a problem.
The firmware update fixed it.
There was a similar problem with some mobos with SATA1 drives which also had a firmware update ... I remember doing it.

Actually Doug it didn't fix all the problems which is how I got into this from
another forum and there are a bunch of problems right now still.

It's not only AMD and Nvidia chipsets... look at the revisions in the Intel ICHr controller chips and IAA.
The "read ahead" cache buffering control chips on the drives, which are doing more 'processing' within the drive itself, has often been at odds with the drive controllers on the mobo.
Seems they must not be communicating well among themselves.
Just about every chipset that has come out has had some kind of drive controller 'issue' usually addressed with BIOS and chipset driver updates or firmware flash updates for the drives themselves.
That is why it is essential to follow and track your "new" mobo on the mnfr website and forums to stay abreast of the "oops! we fixed that!" info that they don't readily broadcast as news. There is a reason for those BIOS and chipset updates you don't really see unless you follow their forums and start to see user complaints that eventually lead to a "download this update to fix it" thread.
As fast as they rush these things out anymore, I think they just launch the ship and see if it floats and then wait for users to start noticing the leaks before they patch them.
