Hey all of you "freebie devotees" that delude yourself into thinking Avg is as good as paid antivirus programs I have a find for you.
Bit Defender, which could be one of the best antivirus programs has a free version and I am running it now. So far the only difference I see between it and 9.0 paid version is it has no firewall but those of you looking for coverage for second pc etc, should give this a try it is World Class Software.

Rich,
Still on the Bitdefender8 bandwagon? I got a distress call from an AVG user who had some Win32.***** virus that infiltrated his pc. I sent him to BitDefender.com to do an online scan and it removed his virus for him. Of course, he's willing to pay now for Bitdefender 9. But should I attempt to persuade AVG users over to Bitdefender 8?

Dale,
I wish the "know it alls" on the other forum we all know, could see these two posts here, as they are sucking in "newbies" who will take anything for nothing, and will lose their systems over time. Yes by all means Bit Defender is one of the 3 best antivirus programs out there. Avg is only free. Avast is worse and free.

Avast isn't that bad. I was using it (using BitDefender now). Not the best detection, but I never got a single virus. Some people went on my computer and somehow managed to get some spyware on, but I removed that easily enough. The free programs aren't bad as long as you know what you are doing and can manually remove whatever you get if necessary, but for the average user, a paid program is probably better.

But PI, you are an experienced user. I never get experienced users in that have systems that are unrecognizable. I get newbie users who always apologize and say "now I aint no computer literate person, ya know". And htose folks should be buying the very best!

Rich,
Apparently the BitDefenderFree version 8 does not scan incoming email, as per http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html

Damn it right you are Dale and I never noticed that. It is totally an on demand program, so actually it doesn't appear to monitor anything.

the user interface states that the Virus Shield is only available on the paid for version. so seems like typical freebie, tries to remove issue after it's already in. Not for me, I'll pay for v9 or NOD32

No real-time scanning, either. Why not try the beta (http://news.bitdefender.com/NW229-en--BitDefender-Generation-10-Enters-Beta.html) of the next version, 10? I'll try it, and get it when it's released if I like it.

I have tested the full version and next to Nod32, this is my favorite but I am lloking for a good free one for the "dopes" that won't pat money for one, and frankly Avg and Avast, leave me cold. Personally run Nod 32 and have for years.

The beta blocked all internet access. The reason: antispyware module's "Privacy Control".

Pi

What a brilliant way to insure that you will not get a new virus, worm or trojan.

Why didn't I think about that???
