Any ideas why a cut-n-pasted url from this board will sometimes not work?

As of now, the one in Post # 1 here works. The one in Post #2 does not. They appear identical.

If I cut-n-paste the url into an email message, it doesn't work either.

I noticed if you right-click "properties" on the first one, you get:
[url]http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2245(you have to stretch the window to get the whole address)

On your second one, you get:
[url]http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/...ead.php?t=2245

I removed the [url] at the end of each so the actual text is displayed.

I think that I see your problem.

I suspect that you cut the first one out of the Firefox address window for that page and the second out of a post (first test message?). We have observed that vBulletin compresses long urls to an abbreviated form when they are inserted in the post (notice the three dots in the middle of the addresses that you posted).

It appears that when the vBulletin software inserts an abbreviated url on a post that it establishes an internal link to the real url. In effect, the abbreviated url becomes a form of a shortcut, the same as an icon on your desktop. When you cut an abbreviated url from a message you are getting the characters in the post but not the linked url. Pasting these characters in another message results in a bogus url because of the missing characters and three dots. The bogus url gives the appearance of a legitimate url because of the presence of http://

Does this description fit what you have been testing?

Edit: I saw Ron's post after I submitted mine. That observation was the basis for my suspicion. You can observe the same thing by moving your cursor of the link in the post. The 'real' url is displayed in the bar at the bottom of your screen just above the taskbar.

From an article I wrote for a computer user group:

Wouldn't it be great if you could shorten these long links and even better give them more meaningful names? If you do a web search for 'shorten URL', you'll find several sites that will do what you want. The one I like is at www.LessLink.com. It not only shortens URLs, but it also allows you to add as many as three keywords. I also like the fact that it was developed by a local designer.

If you see "..." in the URL posted here, it is abreviated and therfore,
you cannot use normal cut & paste operations.

Instead, right click the URL, and choose...

"Copy Link Location" <--for Firefox/Mozilla/Seamonkey
or..
"Copy Shortcut" <--for IE .

Then use paste to place it where you want it.

Thanks for the great tip - its just what we need to work with vBulletin's abbreviated url's. This certainly completes the answer to Lina's question.

I'm having a problem understanding all the posts here....

From RAK's post, I suspect that before I cut-n-paste an url from the KH forum:

-- I should determine if the url has been shortened (right-click on the url, Properties, elongate window)

-- and, if it has been shortened, I should use the original url?

Lina,
I have been doing that on forums and I would bet I have left 300 of them and never had one wrong, I would not let it worry you....

Lina,
You are doing so well with computing- knocking the socks off most others that started where you did at your point in life. :tea: Your tenacious attacking of the PC has made you the quite the expert, whether you admit it or not. I bet you could start giving seminars with all the knowledge you've gained. :first:

Keep up the good work, ma'am. It's an inspiration to me to see you so determined to get this computing thing down. :yo: How coud I ever put my head down or be ready to give up when I see how far you've come and how determined you are to keep at it, no matter what issues arise on horizon.

Thanks again, Dale. I remember how you once assured me that I wasn't asking "dumb" questions and encouraged my persistence to get the correct answer, an answer explained so I could understand. Consequently, my first computer did not get thrown out the window.

Today it's a toss up for me: am I having a senior moment? or is there something amiss with the computer or software?

If I live long enough, maybe I'll write a book entitled, "What Computer-for-Dummies Books Are Trying to Explain."

I subscribe to The Computer Lady's newsletter. She seems to be able to explain things in simple terms and gives step-by-step instructions, using as little computer jargon as possible .... but she can't replace this forum for me.

The Computer Lady's website: http://asktcl.com/

You can subscribe to her newsletter by clicking Free Newsletter in the lefthand column of that web page.

Dale, I'd be interested in some feedback from you. I get more from her than Kim Kommando.
