Here's a tip for newbies. This had me befuddled until Rich M explained it to me during one of our Wednesday night KH Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom sessions.

Spybot Search and Destroy Immunization

After updating Spybot Search and Destroy's definition file, it is possible that there are new items for the immunization list. By default, simply downloading the latest updates isn't enough to add any new items to Spybot's immunization file and if one wants to take advantage of any new updates to this file, they must once again immunize their computer. After downloading new updates, remember to run Spybot's immunization function to update it as well.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPYBOT S&D'S IMMUNIZE FEATURE

How Immunize Works Mainly With Internet Explorer

Spybot's "Immunize" feature adds entries to the Windows Registry
which has the following effects on IE (Internet Explorer browser):

* Blocks cookies from certain websites.

* Places certain websites in the IE restricted zone and
locks down the IE if you visit one of those nasty websites.

* Blocks the download/execution of selected ActiveX scripts.

Firefox and Mozilla browser as well...

As well what????
Please elaborate.

Never mind I was thinking Spwareblaster not Spybot which deadens Firefox and Mozilla as well as IE. I don't know if Spybot does that.

Pete, I read this at that web site:
About Immunize With Browsers Other Than IE

Spybot's Immunize feature works mainly with the Internet Explorer
browser. Unfortunately it provides no additional protection
for other browsers with at least one exception. For example, AOL's
browser is integrated with Internet Explorer so it benefits
from Spybot's Immunize feature.

You don't mention how/if Spybot's Immunize feature works with Firefox. I use Firefox as my default browser, and Spybot's Immunize feature seems to work flawlessly with it.

Did I misunderstand you??

Hi Lina,
Spybot's Immunize feature is something that mainly benefits IE.
To my knowledge, Immunize does nothing to benefit alternate
browsers such as Mozilla, Firefox, Seamonkey, or any browser that
works independent of IE.

The AOL browser is the only one I know of that utilizes some of
the same security features built into IE. The MSN browser might be
another one, but I have not been able to confirm that.

Now I must ask you, what has given you the impression that Immunize
is doing anything in conjunction with Firefox?

Lina are you using Spywareblaster, because it does almost the same thing and does work on Firefox.

Rich, I'm using both SpywareBlaster and Spybot - Search & Destroy.

I use Firefox as default browser and Internet Explorer for Windows Updates and once in a while for things I can't get via Firefox.

Should I get rid of Spybot Search & Destroy? ....... even though I use IE sometimes?

You say SpywareBlaster does almost the same thing. Any harm keeping them both?

I have:

60GB (46.4 GB free space)
768 RAM
XP Home
Firefox, default browser
Kaspersky PAV
SpywareBlaster
Spybot-Search&Destroy
Win Patrol v7.0.l.0
JV16 Power Tools
Spider V1.16, HijackThis - v1.97.

I intend to install CrapCleaner. Is there anything else I should add or remove?

Thanks.

Lina
