15" TiBook; Tiger
Dialed my ISP this morning - OK. Dial later on and it's not connecting. I've tried 2 different ISP phone numbers and my backup ISP. Not connecting. Other machine in same room are connecting OK.
Here's what happens - the modem dials and I hear the squaking start. The squaking stops after a short second and there's no more activity on the line. Normally the squaking continues for several seconds, so something is different here.
Later this afternoon, it was connecting. However a while later and it wasn't connecting again. I reset PRAM, powered down/up. I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem.

Are we seriously concerned here about the failure of $15 hardware?
If you must use dialup, buy an external modem.

I take this thing with me to my customers' places. Many are on dial up and I need to use it sometimes to test their dial up connections. Yes I can get an external, I could get a PCMCIA modem or replace the internal. I'd rather not have the inconvenience of life support devices hanging off the machine or the expense of replacing the internal.
At this point, I'm looking at replacing the internal modem. Cost is about $100. Or I may just get a new machine and sell this to someone who hasn't a need for a modem.

Tony,
I have experience with the last thought...and sorry i didn't realize it was a laptop. I could not sell a laptop where the modem didn't work at any price, even to people who said they would never need the modem. I would fix it if you can, and i didn't realize yiou can replace those...of course my laptop experience isn't great either.

Sorry about that - I should have mentioned that a TiBook is short for Apple's Titamium line of laptops.

Well no sweat as I should have noticed the "BOOK" part of that anyway.
