I'm having problem installing Site Advisor for Firefox

www.siteadvisor.com

Followed these instructions:

* Click the button which says "Edit Options..."
* When the "Allowed Sites" window appears, type "www.siteadvisor.com" into the address box if it does not already appear.
* Click the "Allow" Button.
* Click "Close."
* Click the above "Install" button again and follow the on-screen instructions.

I typed in www.siteadvisor.com (without ") in Allowed Sites for Pop-Up Windows. Then I clicked Allow and Close. Stuck there. Won't install.

So, I tried typing www.siteadvisor.com (without ") in Exceptions for Warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes. Stuck there. Still won't install.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure what is happening on your machine so I decided to install SiteAdvisor on my version of Firefox (I already use it on IE).

After going to the the www.siteadvisors.com (http://www.siteadvisors.com) download site, my initial attempt to download the extension was met by the same message that you apparently got - "To protect your computer, Firefox has prevented the download ...". When I clicked on Edit Options, www.siteadvors.com (http://www.siteadvors.com) was in the entry window; I clicked Allow and was returned to the download panel.

I turned the I Agree radio button On and clicked Install. I received the Software Installation popup window. I clicked on Install Now and it went ahead and installed the extension. It then showed the Firefox Extensions popup window with McAfee SiteAdvisor in place. It was necessary to close and restart Firefox to activate SA.

During the install there were two things that I saw might cause a problem - one possible and one likely.

The first is turning on the I Agree radio button. You probably did this because if you just click Install you get a popup telling you that you must accept the license agreement.

The other is more likely. The install process depends a series of popup windows for control of the process. If you have your popup suppression set too high, you may not be presented with the options to start / continue. I have found that we often have several popup stoppers activated without really knowing it. Examples that I use or have observed are browser (Firefox and/or IE), Adaware AdWatch, M$ Antispyware, PopupStopper, PopUp Cop and many other spyware / popup suppressors. On more than one occasion I have had to stop some of these protectors to download or install software.

So I suggest that you temporarily disable your popup protection to see if you can get the install to proceed.

Thanks for your input, Terry.

During last night's KH Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom session, Doug Barrow tried to help me install Site Advisor for Firefox. We went through it a few times, step by step. Restarting the browser did not help.

I don't have any pop-up blocker except for that provided by Firefox, and Site Advisor is allowed in.

I thought about contacting McAfee's support, but wonder if I should bother. Do I really want to install something by McAfee? Perhaps I should leave well enough alone. With Kaspersky, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, etc, my computer may just have enough belts and suspenders.

Thanks so much for taking the time to install Site Advisor for Firefox on your machine. Bless you.

That you know about. The 'technology' of stopping popup is relatively easy. I have seen many related programs include pop stopping as an added 'feature'. Ones that I have personal experience with are the Google Toolbar, AdAware AdWatch and M$ Antispyware. I suspect that most or all spyware programs like Spybot, Hijack This, etc. include (and default) to pop stopping.

If you wanted to try again, I suggest that you stop any spyware program you have running to see if you can get SiteAdvisor to load. I am very pleased with it and think that it is a worthwhile addition to your computer.

In your original post, you mention that you had gone to Tools | Options | Content | Warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes. I assume that it is checked. If you revisit this option and click on Exceptions, is www.siteadvisor.com (http://www.siteadvisor.com) there with a status of Allow?

Why are my Firefox software installs disabled?

Problem
I attempted to install the Firefox extension, but even after using 'Edit Options' to add www.siteadvisor.com as an allowed site, Firefox still displays an error message along the top border of its page frame that 'software installs are disabled'.

Solution
It sounds like software installs are currently disabled in your version of Firefox -- please try the following:

Type about:config in Firefox's Location/URL bar and hit enter. Type xpi to filter and find xpinstall.enabled. Make sure its value is true (double-clicking will toggle between true and false). Now you should be able to install.

For details on the above recommendation, see: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_(Firefox)

The SiteAdvisor extension for Firefox froze during installation. Help!

Problem
While on the SiteAdvisor for Firefox extension install page, I agreed to your EULA and clicked the Install button. Firefox froze.

Solution
It sounds like you might have the NoScript extension installed in Firefox. If this extension is globally blocking scripts, it will prevent the SiteAdvisor Firefox extension from installing. Please click the NoScript icon in Firefox's status bar, then click 'Allow siteadvisor.com', then retry the install. Please don't hesitate to contact us if this doesn't solve your problem.

Looks like good feedback from McAfee, Doug.

Thanks for the information. I'll save it. Like I did with CrapCleaner, I want to sit on this for a while.
