On this Win2K machine, ZA is telling me that Services and Controller app is trying to access the Internet.. It also tells me that Services and Controller is trying to act as a server.

Some Google hits I've found associate Services and Controller with W2K. I haven't got to the bottom of this. So I'm wondering is anyone here is familiar with this behavior.

You should let is connect & act as a server as long as you have the expert rules listed here (http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=AllAboutPorts&message.id=4272). This program (from services.exe in C:\<windows root>\System32 manages the services running on your PC), but certain malicious programs also use a file called services.exe in other folders, so search for services.exe to make sure it isn't in other locations (other than C:\<windows root>\prefetch).

I don't understand why a computer has to access the Internet to manage services. Now, what would happen if the computer wasn't connected to the Internet.

Do you have a router in place? Are the DNS resolvers pointing to the router or the ISP DNS servers?

W2k was set for domain authentication and when DNS resolvers are set to resolve to the internet - the services are doing that way of authenticating.

If it was setup as a standalone - there would be no need to authenticate and the Local Area Connection could be disabled.

Thanks - It was standalone, on dialup to boot.
