I just finished loading Windows 2000 on a 2001 vintage Gateway Essential 933. The video isn't working the way it should. I can't get better than 16 colors no matter what display driver I iuse.

Device Manager shows Video Controller (VGA Compatible) with a yellow question mark. I'm guessing that this motherboard needs some video drivers that were shipped with the original Gateway Win98S, but are not a part of Win2K. Aida32 says this is an Intel Easton D815EEA mobo.

Next step is to look at Gateway's site for drivers, maybe search elsewhere also. What you say?

At Gateway's site you need a serial number for that computer. Just input that in the box, from the link below.

Tony before wasting a lot of time here do SDP4 and then all Windows updates as I would bet the driver updates which I seldom use will spot this driver and setup the video.

Windows update complete - still can't get more than 16 colors. Now to look for mobo drivers.

I did a Windows update - still can't get this thing past 16 colors. I really could use some help here folks. I've been to Gateway's site and downloaded the drivers they had available. I don't think any of them address the root problem. That is VGA Video Controller is not installed on this machine. I think without that, it's not able to determine what monitor is connected. This is why the display adapter won't install.

Gateway says this is a Fedora mobo. Aida32 says it's an Intel Easton D815EEA. I'm confused here. What in the world is in this Gateway Essential 933? and why can't I find a driver to get my monitor working?

aaaahhhh..... back to Google.

Love to try to help but see no Essential 933 model listed, nothing even resembling that. Is there a serial number + model number on tower somewhere?
Use this to find out what mobo is Tony:

Thanks for the link. I'll check it after the familiy picnic today. Gateway found the machine. it's s/n 0022894065. There are several downloads, but none that fixed this problem. Well. let me back up for a minute. There was a BIOS update that I downloaded. I copied the files to a floppy as instructed. The machine was supposed to boot from the floppy, but it didn't. I now remember that I was going to download the file again just in case there was a problem with the original download.

Tony,
if youre using the integrated video, you probably need the Intel i815e chipset driver.

Using that s/n you gave, at the link I posted, it shows an intel chipset driver. Did you try that?

Dear PhotoLady and Mylanta, (ladies first)

Thank you for your help. Everything you said was correct. The other day I downloaded the Intel graphics drivers. After revisiting it tonight, I see what happened. The other day after downloading the file, I got frustrated when things didn't go the way the instructions said they should. At that point, I just decided that it was probably something else.

After reading your posts tonight, I tried it again. This time, I threw away the instructions and simply did an Add New Hardware from the Control Panel. Wow! it's working.

Love this place,

thanks - here's something else I nioticed on this machine. The Volume Control app works - it controls sound level and stereo balance. However, it doesn't make the 'bink' noise when you adjust any of the controls. Is this normal with W2K?

The bink noise is a windows xp system beep. It's different in w2k. Fact is, I don't remember what system noises are in w2k. Check in the control panel under sounds.

W2K is usually a "ding" noise.
