I guess I'm starting to get the same feeling toward Asus that Rich had. The Asus board that was sent to me to replace the one that wouldn't retain the cmos seems to have a Northbridge fan problem. Now this is a re-furbished board so I wasn't mad at Asus that the fan stopped working but I read you can purchase a new fan from Asus. I thought I would just order a new fan and that would be that. Here is where I started to get hot as the longer I looked for someplace to purchase a small part like this the more it evaded me. I then thought I might as well just send them an E-Mail and wait for them to tell me how to go about it. As I started to fill in the form to send the E-mail I was asked questions that had nothing to do with my problem. I tried just skipping over the answers to what memory, video card, hard drive and serial numbers were. Thast didn't work as it was rejected. I then went back and searched out these answers and filled them in, after 45 minutes I finally was ready to submit. To my surprise I got "the server is down, try again later" message. So right now I'm steaming.. Just had to rant... Questions to come...

Try Compusa ... they have quite a selection of fans and you can likely find an appropriate substitute.
Or the local "brick and mortar" if there is one left in your area.
These are roughly the same as old PII fans. A drop of super glue on each corner where the fan meets the heat sink is all it takes to mount it.

That's a good idea as I have Abit Northbridge fans that would work but the seem to be a bit larger. I just didn't know how to mount them but the super glue idea should work. I also wrote to Newegg to see what they recommend. I'm hoping they would send me in the right direction.
My question, as I have already changed these on Abit boards but the boards were not mounted in the case.
Should I take the motherboard out to get the old fan out or is there another way. I was thinking of just turning the Abit fan over and letting it blow down on the old fan. This would be using the old fan as a heatsink.

Depends how the original is attached.
Is it pinned or glued?
Is this an aluminum heat sink?
The pinned type can be a bugger to get at unless you pull the mobo out as you may have to get underneath.
Sticking the new one on top of the old should work just fine.
In adding these small fans to other machines that didn't come with one, just an aluminum heat sink, I found a very tiny drop of super glue that contacts a fin is sufficient on all four corners and easily pops off again if needed.
Stong enough to hold, easy to break loose.

Boy is it HOT out there. This isn't the weather for overweight overage people like me.
Anyway the Fan that's in there now is pinned thru the motherboard. I can get it working if I just give the blade a little push. I wanted to check to see if it was the connection or the fan and it is the fan. I guess the best way is to just pull the motherboard and install a new one...

If it spins up... is it noisy?
If the bearings are not shot and it's just dirt, stick the tube from a can of compressed air under it and into the hub and blow it out.
Although people don't recommend WD40, a squirt of that into the hub of a noisy fan has often restored it for me and kept it running.
BTW: some of those pins are 1/2 turn spring loaded and easily pop out. The ones with the pointed tips on the bottom are a real bugger to get out of the hole without breaking something.

WD-40 might displace any lubricant left in there. I'd try something like the ol' 3-in-1 oil.

I tried blowing it out with air and It started the next time but when I shut it down and tried to re-start it,
nothing happened. I tried getting some fishing reel oil into it but there doesn't seem like there is a place to get in.I have it running now and I figure I'll let it run and see if the oil works it's way into someplace where it does some good.I'm almost ready to pull the motherboard.

I've been able to pull muffin fans apart & apply some oil to extend their life. Can you take the fan apart?

HOW MUCH DID YOU SAVE ON THAT MOTHERBOARD AGAIN? ? ? ? ?
It really sounds like you are spending more time on a POS than I would ever think about doing EVEN IF IT WAS MY PERSONAL SYSTEM.

I have to give it to you Dan, your right but just for my information, what would I be doing if I wasn't fooling with this computer. It isn't like I need a computer as I have six in this room alone. It isn't even as if that is the fastest one as I finished an Opteron that runs great. It's what I do to have fun and learn. Now since you asked me and I told you are you going to ask Rich?

After getting off here I went and got the computer and took the motherboard out. The fan had two spring clips but they had topedo head ends and to make a long story short I pushed down on the springs and snipped the heads off. There was no way I was going to get them out without messing up the board. After jiggling it the fan finally came loose. It looks just like a minature CPU and has grease under it. Now all I have to do is get a replacement..
While working on the motherboard I got to thinking about what Dan said. How Much did I save by buying that motherboard(refurbished) and It came to me what I did before I started messing with compuiters. First I smoked three packs of cigarrettes a day( stopped 14 years ago). Would stop at the fire company every night to have a few and play the punch boards ( wasted a lot more on them then computers) and when I wasn't working I was playing the horses. Just think they even opened a horse parlor a couple of miles from me. I guess instead of buying the motherboard I could have went to play the horses.. I guess when you come right down to it I SAVED AN AWFUL LOT OF MONEY...Thanks Dan for reminding me of just how much money I have saved...
Then again if you go to my web site klinesplace.com and click on Handicapping contest you will see a picture of my best friend who cannot stand computers. He still plays the horses....

Larry, I hadn't checked your web site in a long time. Looks neat! Gee, thanks for the honorable mention (Lina's cartoons).
Keep computing.......much better for your health and finances than gambling, tobacco, etc. Keeps the brain cells alive and well.

LOL, I would be out riding my motorcycle(s)! Enjoying the spring air, the smells of flowers in the fields, and watching twisting roads roll by as I leaned into each one of them.
I always take my camera with me for those special shots that I am getting ready to frame and put up on the walls of my study.
So, I would have saved the "time" on that motherboard to enjoy one of the favorite pasttimes I have found in years.
(And leave my cigarettes alone! I enjoy a cigarette like some people enjoy their cigars - a cup of coffee and a cigarette. By the way I have NEVER smoked more than a half a pack a day in 25 years - I just enjoy a good laid back puff  )

Well I don't know how my name got in here but so be it!!!
Hey as much as I have had a bad run with Asus, I finally had to send back the Dfi, part of my bargain buy on ebay. A great Mod on Tech Guy convinced me to go with Ati Crossfire chipset and there are really very few boards out there that are pure Ati. And on checking availability, I wound up with Asus A8R-MVP and it's a really nice board and it went in so nicely. Other than for a really odd placment for ide cables (under hard drives but in Abit style to the side so you have to take hard drives out to insert), this board is a delight!
Hey as for what else to buy. Well it used to be clothes till I gave up smoking and gained much too much wait to take any pride in what I wear.

Well as an update to the Northbridge Fan problem. I was having a terrible time finding a new fan and was ready to settle for a heat sink even though I kept reading about Asus sending people the fan. I then went to a Asus forum and asked how these people were getting in touch with Asus to get the fans as I had sent them two E-Mails and was still waiting for some reply. I was quickly given a phone number that proved fruitful. I had to wait until this morning but it only took a few minutes to have a lady take my name and address and say she will send me the fan. She said I should have it within 5-7 days which is fine with me. It seems this might be an ongoing problem.... I Hope this solves all problems with
this board..

5 to 7 DAYS!
Are they sending it via pony express? ? ?
What if you were a business? I would think IF it is a known problem (which seems likely since they were happy to get one out to you) they would be right on top of it and have it to you next business day.
I know that I have had Intel ship a motherboard, processor, and a fan (I only needed one of these replacements in 7 years - but it was next day before 10:30 AND they even had a tag to send back the parts on them.

Now Larry, you always jump into the toilet...I think the more obvious conclusion is Intel is a better more responsive customer service oriented company.

I don't know about more important or having an influence - but I always tell tech support for whatever company that I am working with a business and THEY expect the same from a supplier to customers as they give - and their computers are a integral part of their serving their customers.
I also have had that from HP and Dell.

Doesn't sound like it's any different then any other company...
