Sorry if this should go in the "Software Problems" forum, but it's more of a software question/online store question. Please move it if necessary.
I'm probably going to take an online course over the summer about designing webpages with html, and it might require Frontpage (asked if I had it in the registration). I don't have it, so I looked and found an academic version, which I believe I qualify for, at VioSoftware (http://www.viosoftware.com/FrontPage/Front+Page+2003+Academic.html) for only $85, and a "CD-only (http://www.viosoftware.com/FrontPage/Front+Page+2003+%28CD+Only%29.html)" that says it comes with the product key for $69.99.
VioSoftware has good reviews that I've seen, but why is it so cheap? I know the one isn't even OEM, but the MSRP for the full, retail is $179. If the site is good, which would you recommend; the Retail Academic or CD-only.

If you look around you can finding some tremendous deals on academic software. Many vendors including M$ and Macromedia make deeply discounted copies of their software available to students and faculty. I have been able to get a couple such deals thru my brother who teaches at a college. This software if fully featured and AFAIK indistinguishable from the normal retail version.
One of the leading vendors in this field is Academic Superstore

If you are talking about a significant purchase, it pays to takes the time to investigate the options. Even if you are not a student, a close friend or relative in education probably can help out.
I would recommend the academic version which is probably the same as the retail boxed version. If you are going to take a course and are required to purchase a separate textbook, maybe the CD-only version will work for you.

That's an interesting site, thanks. Vio software has it for $5 cheaper, but I'll read more online reviews for both of them first. I am a student, so I don't have to go through anyone else. I'll wait to get FrontPage until I talk with the instructor of the online course and see if there are any free alternatives that are available to use for the course.
Thanks.

I don't suppose you have Office 2003, eh? Front Page comes with that. I had it with my older version of Office also.

That's smart. Since you are taking the course, the school may be able to provide you a copy at a favored price.
Enjoy

The course isn't available over the summer, so I'll be taking a different one (science-related, of course). I can hopefully take it during next school year.

PI,
Microsoft changed it's licensing on it's educational / academic software late last year (I think it was at the end of summer).
You use to get the "full version" which qualified as an upgradeable product. When they released the Parent / Teacher academic version they no longer support (read ALLOW) you to upgrade to the next version with without buying the full package.
So for instance you got P/T Office 2003 and P/T Office 2007 comes out - you can't get an upgrade version to recognize 2003. You have to uninstall 2003 BEFORE you can install 2007. That also does away with running several versions of Office on the same computer. I presently run Office 97, 2000, XP, and 2003 on my system for technical support. I also run WP 10 and Lotus SmartSuite 9.8. If I was running the P/T version, I would not be able to run the other Office suites because they built on each other to allow upgrade paths.
These academic versions are the FULL functioning applications though.

Here's a link to on line courses from MS = http://office.microsoft.com/training.
Probably don't need the software to take the course.
