Does XP Home come with Notepad? I have Word Pad, but not Notepad.

Apparently it did not come with my computer, and perhaps I inadvertently deleted it?

Start > Search produced no Notepad entry. It kept searching endlessly. I left the search for a while; and when I returned, the search had stopped and the window was blank--no notice that Notepad could not be found.

Notepad did not show up in Add/Remove Programs or in Start > Programs > Accessories or any place there.

Hi Lina,

Wordpad is installed by default when XP is installed. So either someone unchecked it when installing XP, or removed it at a later time.

Either way, insert your XP cd, then choose "Install additional XP components".

Edit: Should have said "Notepad".

Lina,
I believe Notepad was replaced by Wordpad in XP. It's a more robust word processor than Notepad. Is there some reason you want to load Notepad? or are you just curious?

Thanks, Seth. Was just wondering about Notepad. So far I have not had a need for it, so I may leave well enough alone.

Thanks again.

Tony, Seth's reply reached me before yours. Glad to know I did not goof and delete Notepad and that it was never in XP......maybe I remember it from W98?

Thanks.

Tony & Lina,
Notepad and Wordpad are both native to XP...

Lina,

Do a search on Notepad - you may have moved it / or removed it (and the "you" is figurative).

The EXECUTABLE should be in the C:\Windows directory (ie C:\Windows\notepad.exe)

IF you don't find the file there, you can go to Control Panel \ Add Remove Programs \ (on the right side Windows Components) \ and install it back from there. You will need the System CD that came with your system.

Dan,
Windows Components is on the left side of Add/Remove Programs..."are you sure your computer worked yesterday"?

Don't know why it's not on my XP-Pro machine. It's not in the Windows Components Add/Remove either. This is interesting. I'm going to look at a few other machines to see if Notepad is installed. I have two customers to see today. I'll check their machines.

I meant my OTHER right LOL. Hey I was still working on my first cup of coffee when I wrote that - I am just glad I had the Add Remover Programs right :D

I'm at my first stop of the day. This XP Media Center Edition computer has both Notepad and Wordpad installed. I didn't find Notepad or Wordpad in Add/Remove or Add/Remove Windows Components.

Tony, it did not work for me either. Add/Remove Windows Components did not reveal Notepad or WordPad. I'm running XP Home, which came with a new Dell.

Dan, thank you!!!!!! I can't believe what I accomplished!

I followed your instructions do a search for C:\Windows\notepad.exe, and some Notepad entries appeared. I right-clicked the first entry and created a shortcut to my desktop. Voilá! :clap2: :clap2:

Then I decided that I will rarely use Notepad and did not want it cluttering my desktop. Sooooo, thanks to something I think I read on the KH forum, I dragged the desktop Notepad icon to Start, then Programs, and then dropped it into Accessories (someone, also probably on this forum, said it belonged there). I can't believe I did it!:cheer2:

Thank you, KH! :grouphug:

Lina,

In your first post you stated that you ran a search for notepad but it didn't show up. The executable didn't show up because under the Advanced search options, "Search sub folders" and "Search system folders" wasn't checked.

I shouldn't have assumed that they were already checked.

Seth, thank you! Will make a note of that for possible future searches.

No prob.

In post #15, you quoted twice and were able to add your comments after each quote. How do you quote more than once in a single reply?

There are a couple of ways to generate multiple quotations in the same post.

1. Manually, you can insert the word 'quote' in square brackets before the text that you want to quote and follow it with a slash and the word 'quote' also in square brackets. This can be done as many times as you like. vBulletin uses its own HTML-like coding structure. You can see how this works if you click on the Quote button on any existing post. If you follow the first 'quote' with an equal sign and a name, you can identify the source or your quote.

2. Automatically, you can highlight the text that you want to use as a quotation and click on text balloon above the reply entry window. This will wrap the highlighted material with the quote coding. Again, you can include as many as you would like.

Manually? I'm a guy! I never do anything manually if it can be done automatically:)

Geez, I have to do a lot more experimenting with the tools provided above the reply entry window! I guess most of the time I think of and use the computer as I did my old IBM Selectric Typewriter. Difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.
