XP Keyboard Shortcuts

Do I understand these correctly?

1. SHIFT+DELETE: Delete item permanently (without going to Recycle Bin)

2. SHIFT-CTRL + ENTER: Deletes shortcuts permanently (without going to Recycle Bin).

Is SHIFT-CTRL + ENTER only for shortcuts?
I could not find or confirm its proper use in List of the keyboard shortcuts that are available in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301583

I didn't hear of the Shift+Ctrl+Enter one before. I know it opens a background tab in the Opera browser. Where did you see this?

Sorry, Pi. I was confused as hell. I was googling and checking the Microsoft list of XP keyboard shortcuts and meant to ask about Shift-Delete, Enter, not Shift-Ctrl, Enter.

I tried Shift-Delete, Enter to remove a shortcut from my Desktop.
It removed it and bypassed the Recycle Bin. It also worked to clean out %temp% and bypass the Recycle Bin.

Where else would it be convenient and safe to use?

My question came up after I emailed this KH post to my brother:

Apparently it takes a good deal of effort to delete a shortcut in Windows Vista. I have a feeling this humorous picture sequence anonymously posted on Flickr won’t last too long so I’m reposting it here and linking the original image. Chances are that by the time the retail version ships, deleting a shortcut will be much the same as it is now but this is worth a posting for a laugh.

My brother commented: What about using Shift-Delete,Enter?
Just what we need...another piece of excrement! Can you believe he's the richest guy in the world...and for producing an abomination! and It deletes any item instantaneously, i.e., w/o going thru the recycle bin. Since your shortcut kept popping back to life ( from the recycle bin?) I thought Shift-Delete, Enter might kill it permanently...

Since we're on the subject, I was watching my on site tech yesterday and he was pulling up a window which showed what was open. So, I want to know exactly what key combination he used in XP to get this window?

might try.. ALT+TAB

Not exactly Pete. This action "alt + tab" brings up from minimize. What he had was a small window with icons showing across the top and a small type in box, though this was blank, so I'm not sure that was a type in box or something else. I can't explain it any better, sorry.

Try alt+tab again with several apps open on the taskbar.
What you described above is exactly what I see when I do.. alt+tab

Can someone else verify this please.

And all that does is bring them out of being minimized to maximize. The box is different, there is actually a small window that shows up when using some key combination. I have yet to find what this key combination is and I can't as the tech cause he's not here anymore.

Alt-Tab on my XP machine brings up a small window in the center of the screen. It displays an icon of every file, folder, application that is open. Trick is to keep the Alt key down. Then you can tab thru to the application/window/folder you want to get into.

And I just tried that with three different windows open and it did bring up the box/window I saw him using.

Only thing I can see it would useful for though is if one couldn't get see the task bar because with task bar you can see what's open. I guess it would be useful for when installing a program and you can't minimize the program to see what else is opened!?

I use it just about always, but make sure you are sure you want to delete it. You can get it back with some tools, but it's best to not delete things you need.

Try Microsoft's "Alt-tab Replacement" powertoy for XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx). It's much better and offers a preview.
