Users wonder what else isn't Microsoft telling them

Microsoft has recently unveiled that its Windows Genuine Advantage makes calls to Microsoft every day. Most users were aware that the piracy tool would ping Microsoft servers periodically, but every day has been a bit surprising to some users. Microsoft claims the daily check is a safety measure that allows the tool to shut down if it malfunctions. Although users have reported that WGA falsely labeled their software as pirated copies of Microsoft operating systems. The program takes note of the computer's manufacturer, language being used and location where the operating is set for.

The Register states "First of all this is a pilot - customers have the choice to subscribe or not. WGA is very careful about which license keys are checked - some numbers have been leaked and therefore have been culled by Microsoft. If customers bought a genuine copy of Windows but as a result of a poor installation or a repair a different license key was used then WGA would flag it as not genuine."

The software is being offered to people that signed up to receive Windows security updates. If a user is using a pirated copy of Windows, they will start receiving reminders from Microsoft that the software isn't authentic. People using pirated versions of Windows are not eligible to receive some Windows updates. David Lazar, director of the Windows Genuine Advantage Program, has said that the company is thinking about modifying WGA so it only checks in with Microsoft every two weeks.

I think once/day is a little extreme, hopefully they'll change it to two+ weeks like the article says.

The program takes note of the computer's manufacturer
There aren't too many PCs by my computer's manufacturer. ;)

I think they likely already know. Still, there are a few cases where people don't even know their OS is illegal. :(

Microsoft to ease up on piracy check-ins
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+ease+up+on+piracy+check-ins/2100-7348_3-6082334.html?tag=cd.top

The software maker this month plans to update the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications program so that it only checks in with Microsoft once every two weeks, instead of after each boot-up, a company representative said Friday. By year's end, the tool will stop pinging Microsoft altogether, the representative said. ...

... "We are changing this feature to only check for a new settings file every 14 days," Microsoft said in a statement on its Web site. "Also, this feature will be disabled when WGA Notifications launches worldwide later this year."

No meaningful data is exchanged during the check-in with Microsoft, the software maker said. Unlike the initial validation, which sends system information to Microsoft, the check-in operation is limited to the download of the new settings file, the company said. ...

Microsoft presses the Stupid button
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/index.php?p=76

...They should apologize, publicly and profusely, for mixing an anti-piracy tool in with security updates and take steps to make sure that it never happens again.

And they should find whoever pushed the Stupid button in this case and put them on telephone support duty for the next six months. That might be an appropriate punishment.

*good blog!

Maybe the the cracks available for Windows Genuine Advantage is justified in this case? Not that I have a use for one but did notice they started popping up on the net hours after MS did this.

From what I can see, it cannot be removed once installed. I needed a program (Excel Viewer, I think) and was given the impression that I had to sign up for WGA to download it. Haven't had any problems, but the last thing I want is a damn spyware program phoning home all the time. Besides, in the long run, M$ profits from piracy just by the fact that people are running Microsoft programs, legal or not, instead of another a competitor's. It's like billions of dollars of free publicity.

I installed a new firewall today, Comodo, instead of using XP's. The first thing that popped up was to allow WGA access to the internet and act as a server. I said no. Is this stopping the phone home thing? Have I stopped the downloading of MS updates through the automatic update setting in the Security Center because of not allowing WGA access to the internet?
Be interesting to find out.

Hmmm..... Well, that's more than Zone Alarm is doing. But even if it is blocked, it's still using up resources. Maybe I'll try out Comodo.
