View Full Version : More Members?
Greetings.
I think it would be nice to have more members at KH, hence more posting activity. If the site owners agree, then how can this be achieved?
How are new members generated? Is it just the hope that they'll find the site by a general internet search for computer help?
Also, isn't the name Kicken Hardware very limited considering hardware is only a small part of the site?

Seth,
We just converted to VBulletin software and we are actually still in a pre announcement or pre-grand opening project. We have begun to pick up more users weekly because this software as it gets seen out there on the search engines, which the old Phppp software could not be seen, will aid in this, and that was part of the reason we did this.
The Forum development really isn't quite ready for "prime time" as we don't even have all the bugs out. We have our archives from the old forum we need to free up. We need to get Spell Check working as we had it before and there are a few other projects to get done.
We hope by mid july to be annoucing our opening and rekindling the vendor relationships and you will see dramtic growth when that happens.
Kicken Hardware is just a name and it is just something that grew on us.
This tighly knit group has a lot of great experienced users with a nucleus of great knowledge, and actually has produced an enormous amount of posts for a small user base. The interesting thing to remember is at this point KH user group is represented of mostly experienced users so our response time to a problem is extremelt fast and accurate.

Yep, sounds like 2 top priority issues.
There's a wealth of info in those archives which would probably be
very good for attracting new users via the search engines.
Another thing that is unique about this forum is the large number
of expert users and selfemployes professionals, each with their
own area of expertise. To me this seems to be the biggest selling
point. Exploiting that could draw in new users.

Pete you said what I said better and I think that is a very good selling point indeed!

This forum certainly does have a great amount of very experienced members. It could compete with several medium to large sized forums with the number of experts and beat them all with a ratio of experts to "regular" users or even to intermediate users like me who are trying to learn more.

Most of us come from another forum where we were insulted often with such things as techs "are a dime a dozen" and remarks like "I could make one phone call and add a hundred techs to my forum". Funny thing though.
That same person couldn't replace the 20 techs he lost with that remark never mind add 100. He must have been mistaken!

The major failure of many "tech" forums out there is where a few individuals like to dominate, humiliate, belittle, berate, harrass, or otherwise intimidate other users.
Maybe they like to show off their superior (often not) skills or just want to be the ruling bully on the block.
Our group has never accepted that kind of behavior which is one of the major reasons we left "that other place".
No question too stupid or beneath us...
We gain experience and knowledge helping other users and each other!
What may seem like a stupid question often leads to a search for information that may prove valuable to us in the end. In our efforts to help someone else, we often learn much ourselves.
Not so much the fact that we all "know stuff", in many cases we do, it is our group ability to find the answers!
We know where to look and how to search.
It's not so much our individual knowledge and expertise but years of researching information and being able to direct others to the right sources for the correct answers.
We highly value our archives ....
The strange off the wall question that results in a long thread of information may just come in handy sometime in the future.
How often do you see something and remember seeing a post or related answer being discussed here before?
I have often had to go back and search the archives for something I know I saw before ... and in many cases, have found what I was looking for right here in our own valuable library.
This was another major reason for creation of this bbs as opposed to "that other place" where years worth of valuable information evaporated into thin air.
While many of us are moderators, you never see a heavy hand among us. All comments welcome and all voices heard.
We may choose not to answer a question, if it's out of our range of expertise or interest level, but the majority of the time, we give everything a fair shot at some type of answer or at least point the user in the right direction to find an answer.
We did keep a '98 forum, but for the majority of us, time has slipped away and we no longer remember that OS and the many problems we solved with it. When we fail to respond to it, it is simply because we have long ago forgotten it.
Our core group of "founders" has been together so long, and stuck to the same principles, that there is no danger of being invaded or taken over by outsiders hell bent on dominating or bullying a forum. We will not ever let that happen! To date, we have yet found need to slap any fingers. We hope it will always continue that way.
You are all welcome to our family here and we hope you stay with us for the long term as we don't intend to go anywhere! Thanks for participating!

All stellar points DB. We have more freedom here than any other forum, yet we never have had the need to close even one post in a year and 4 months or banish anyone ......and we have no "Napoleon" in our Mods either. Probably because as DB explains, we are refugees from egotistical self inflated "cyber Nazis".

Welcome aboard Black Mirror...and no, you will avoid the bowels in here!

Please do not forget our Wednesday Night paltalk Chatroom, though I don't know how our 9PM affects your time warp across the Atlantic...

:welcome: BlackMirror! You traveled all the way across the pond to join us! We're so pleased to have you aboard.
If I'm counting correctly, you are our fourth female member (you, June Byrnes, Photolady, and I) :cheer2:
BlackMirror, we at KH encourage and appreciate suggestions and comments about our relatively new board! We are a work-in-progress. Please post any suggestions and observations about our forum or chatroom in the Feedback section for our immediate attention. Thanks!
We look forward to having you join us, time difference permitting, in our KH Computer Help Desk Paltalk chatroom each Wednesday night, from 9 pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time (Daylight Savings Time when applicable) until whenever. Here's how to get there:
www.paltalk.com *
Chatrooms
Rooms
Computers & Technology
Computer Help & Advice
KH Computer Help Desk
* you need to download Paltalk messenger 8.3 software first if you don't already have Paltalk on your system.
In the chatroom you can find or give one-on-one, hands-on help for computer problems, teach or learn about new developments in computers and software. Computer subjects get first priority. If there is a lull, then humor, finance, and whatever can be discussed intermittently. We try not to talk about politics or religion .... there's enough disagreement about antivirus scanners. LOL
For more information about the KH Computer Help Desk Paltalk Chatroom, see: http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2006-6-14&e=1&c=1
Hope you'll visit us there, too.
Again, a very warm welcome, BlackMirror! :yo:

Following your post, I must say that the reasons you stated, are the best. I for one have many years experience in programming, design, analysis, etc. I go all the way back to the early 60's with mainframes. The last 10 -12 years, it has been strictly PC environment (programming, web design, etc.). When it comes to Hardware or OS, I freeze. That's when I ask my questions. 99.9999% of the time, they are answered with correct fixes.
Outstanding Board and a VERY HARDY THANK YOU to all that have contributed in any way.

I don't have the time right now to research this, BM.
If you are really curious, you can check the Member
List and Join Date and count after June 10, 2006
(when this thread was first started). The Member List
includes only those members who have POSTED on
our new forum.
There are approximately 22 new members who have
NOT posted yet. I can only approximate these due
to the missing email notifications a while back.
And we appreciate that you have recruited so many
new members, BM! .. :grouphug:

If you add the ~22 members who have not yet posted and thus are
not in the Member List, that totals ~67 new members since June 10
of this year.

I have been a member since this BBS came on the air. I do not recall one spat between members. We all have our opinions and opinions can be different but it's the way they are handled (worded) that shows the maturity of this site.
We all have been on other forums where you would ask a question and sometimes the answers you receive take you off of your subject. This forum, stays with the topic until the original poster is satisfied or the contributers just run out of answers.
All of us welcome you here and hope you stay around for a long time.

This is one thing we should always strive for.
If any member ever gets nasty with another
member we need to discourage that kind of
behavior. The best way is via peer pressure
and let the moderators handle the tough ones.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a
good debate, as long as the topic is handled in
a professional manner.

I kinda like it now, but I'm selfish. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. I have no idea what it might be, other than I can email every Realtor in the US (Colorado first) and let them know that there is a very competent site that they can get answers quickly, and accurately. I quit going to two other sites due to some possible immature spats that lasted far too long. Ego's soared. And I finally got to see the African Web Cam. Just a thought.
