I have a W2K machine that needs some work. I ususally boot with an Acronis True Image CD and back up to an external drive before starting in on them.

This machine has Norton Go Back. When Acronis came up, I selected Backup, TI scanned the drives and returned saying the C drive in this machine has an unsupported format and it won't make an image of it.

Later on I'll pull the drive from the laptop and see if I can make an image with it strapped onto another machine. I really want to make an image because in addition to fixing the Outlook problem I posted in another post, I'm upgrading the present 30 GB drive to an 80 GB drive. So I need to make an image to put onto the new drive.

I'm going to email Acronis and check their web site for any info on this in addition to posting the situation here.

Has anyone run into this?

Well, Tony I've found that Go Back can and has caused problems on system other than win98. Since w2k has the ability to go back, certainly not as easy as XP, but still there is a way, I see no sense in using Norton's Go Back. If it were me, I'd remove that utility. Just my 2 cents of course. ;)

yup - I agree, but this customer likes Norton. He's been a good customer; I've worked on (I think) 4 of his machines. I keep telling him Norton isn't the way to go, but their advertising has him convinced otherwise. Maybe they used a corp version of Norton AV at his previous company (which he was VP of and sold to a major pharma company). Either way - the problem is still unsolved.

Much as it is a hateful program, it used to be that in order to use Ghost or Drive Image with GoBack installed, you had to disable GoBack, so it is probably the same today. If you cannot figure out how to do that, try from rescue disk for Acronis. if that doesn't work then not to worry Goback will restore back if you mess something up or want to "play" a little.

Thanks Rich - Yes - that's what I found on Acronis' web site. Disable GoBack and try again. I'm at the library today, so I'll try later when I'm home.

GoBack, as I recall, modified the file table and MBR using a hidden partition. You had to disable it, a PITA process, in order to use other utilities.

I disabled GoBack and was then able to make the ATI image. The problem with that is that GoBack erases all the history files, so once it's disabled, you can't go back to any date prior, even if you re-enable GoBack.

I wonder if Ghost can deal with GoBack's wacky directory structure.

No Tony Ghost is no different. Roxio (real maker of GoBack) used to have a backup program called Take Too that worked with it, but it "went out with the bathwater" as a casualty to XP.
Doesn't matter just make a new point for Goback when you are done, as what's old will still be in the whole image anyway.

I used to use Goback till XP came out and it was a horror show...slowed down system incredibly, but the final thought that sent me packing was that my entire OS rested on top of a software product made by Roxio, and I could not sleep at all after I had that thought.
