Free PC from Sam

I am cleaning house and came across a "Old" PC that works. It's running Windows 95, 64 MB of ram. Installed within the PC are:
- a Toledo Tape Drive Model T10000. I have some brand new tapes for this and I do have the firmware.
- 2 floppy drives
- a CD/RW --not be recognized by the system. It does power-up. It might be as simple as the bios setting or a driver.
- Has a 56K US Robotics modem
- "C" drive -- 8 gig.
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- No monitor
- Can't promise but I may have a set of external speakers.

I was about ready to throw it out but thought I would check first.

This might be a "starter" for a young child or adult to start learning the basics of PC.

Anyone wants it, let me know within a couple days or else it's going to "big sky".

Sam,
Don't just toss it...someone on here gave us a place to turn these in and then take a deduction for it so kills 2 birds with one stone!

Someone can use it...the first one I gave away was a 386 to a friends daughter.

140 odd giveaways later, I see no reason to change my stripes now. The fourth of July weekend just might provide the chance to assemble another 4 or 5 if the weather will just dip below the 100° mark.

I still have the PC available.

If you really want to get rid of it and no family or friends want it, just put it on the side of the street with a sign that says "Free". Someone will probably get it within an hour. Just make sure a garbage truck doesn't pick it up, some materials in it are not safe for the environment.

Anyway, make sure you erase all traces of personal data from the hard drive.

PI:

Good idea -- I still have it and it's taking up space. I think I will use the "Drill" idea mentioned in another post.

It would still be possible to recover data if the hard drive is physically drilled (expensive). Why not run a few sweeps with this (http://www.killdisk.com/)? It will take quite a while to run and I guess it's still possible to recover data from it, but it would be difficult. I would recommend the link, then the hard drive will still work.

You could also use this (http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/30/military-grade-guard-dog-hard-drive-degausser/). It may cost a few hundred thousand, though. ;)

If you can get the drive clean enough for the US Department of Defense 5220.22 M standard, its good. You would almost be safer with this then the drill.

Best bet, run Killdisk, or another disk eraser to the US Department of Defense 5220.22 M standard, take a super magnet (a hunk of neodymium should do it) run the disk over this a few times, drill it, take it apart, burn it, and throw it away. Lets not be paranoid about this. I mean the Government is ready and willing to find your hard drive, put it under an electron microscope, and commit identity theft...
