View Full Version : Spybot VS Ad-Aware

If some of us have some time, it would be pretty cool to run some head to tests with Spybot and Ad-Aware on a customers computer. This thread will just be for 98, as that's about all a 98 machine will run for malware removal. When I get an XP system to test, I'll start a new thread comparing the above, as well as Ewido, Nod32, Trend, and any others I can think of. So here's what I did on this 98 system:

Disabled all startup items from msconfig and ran Ccleaner. Fully updated Ad-Aware and Spybot, then ran full scans from safe mode. I won't list the minor stuff like tracking cookies, or the malware that both of these programs found.

Ad-Aware: Booked Space, Comet Systems, Starware Toolbar, Win32.TrojanDownloader, Your Sitebar.

Spybot: Hotbar, 180 solutions.

Notes: I get the feeling that the hotbar that Spybot found, is actually the same as one of the Ad-Aware items. I'm also suprised that Ad-Aware didn't pick up 180 solutions.

Conclusion: Ad-Aware easily won this round.

My experience is that Adaware usually finds more than Spybot.
I usually run Spybot first. Spybot has the immunize feature and
I always run that. All in all they make a good pair of spyware
cleaners but you really have to run both.

Agreed.

On 98 systems I install both. On XP systems I install Ad-Aware and leave a shortcut on the desktop for Ewido.

To be honest though Pete, I really don't think Spybot's "Immunize" feature does much.

Seth, are you aware of these features?

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPYBOT S&D'S IMMUNIZE FEATURE
How Immunize Works Mainly With Internet Explorer

Spybot's "Immunize" feature adds entries to the Windows Registry
which has the following effects on IE (Internet Explorer browser):

* Blocks cookies from certain websites.

* Places certain websites in the IE restricted zone and
locks down the IE if you visit one of those nasty websites.

* Blocks the download/execution of selected ActiveX scripts.

Yes Pete, I understand how the immunize feature works.

I just don't think it's that good.

Ok, I'm all ears.:)
Please explain what you mean.

For example, if Immunize loads site definitions onto the Restricted Zone
that locks down the IE browser if someone happens to visit one of the
many known dangerous websites, how can that not be a huge benefit?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Immunize is a cureall for preventing
spyware from getting in, but for those who use IE or AOL browsers, and
only use the FREE spyware scanners like Spybot & Adaware, Immunize
is very beneficial.

A few things come to mind:

1) Does Spybot create a log of what was blocked?

2) Updating Spybot does not update the immunize feature. Most users won't update Spybot, let alone remember to install the update to the immunize function.

3) Even if the immunize feature was constantly updated, any perceived protection would only be a drop in the bucket.

Since they're both not connecting, I would suspect a third party program is the suspect...and most likely your firewall. You can confirm that by temporarily disabling your firewall and trying the update, or go into your firewall's settings and you should be able to add Spybot and Spyware Blaster to "Trusted Applications" (or some other heading like that).

LOL...did you notice I was banned for two weeks at ***? That's ok though, as I really don't care and I knew it was coming. That poster took my malware advice and it cleaned up everything except for one really nasty bugger (Mirar). He also had a problem removing Nero's trial version and posted a new HijackThis log file. Anyway, I told him how to get rid of that last piece of malware, as well as how to clear up the Nero problem. I also noticed that his log had some minor entries that he needed to delete. Since I didn't have the time to go through the log completely, I told him I would be back later.

So what happened? Well after fixing his malware problem (without endless logs ad nauseam), as well as fixing his Nero problem, my post was deleted and I was banned. LOL!!! Can you believe that? Banned for efficiently fixing his problem! Idiots...

BTW- Don't worry about the thread, as I'll be starting a new one that will include many other malware removal programs.

I wasn't banned, but a certain member (not mod) almost made me leave, but it didn't have anything to do with me coming here, it was a while back before BM joined *** and around a month after Rich joined ***.

There was an interesting thread...
I didn't see that. I don't really approve of the adult content, but I realize I can just ignore it. I haven't posted in ***'s joke forum since October, I think.
