OS= Window XP Pro

Within the last couple of hours, I got my new system:
P4 3.0
Intel mobo
DDr 2 ram 667
2 internal sata drives 80 gig and 160 gig
1 external sata 250 gig
floppy
LG 16X dvd + R dvd burner
CD-rw

So far great. I am in the process of installing other software.

My Question:
When Windows XP Pro was installed and Setup, the user name "TECH" was put in. When I go to register a product, "Tech" shows up in the User Name.
In Document and Settings, I see "C:\Documents and Settings\Tech".

Is there any way to change this? I tried a right-click/rename -- would not allow saying it was a system name.

I tried control panel/User Accounts -- "Tech" is not listed.

I'd think it would show up in User accounts. What users are listed in the User Accounts? I don't have an XP machine up right now, but I think the procedure is to open User Accounts, find the 'Tech' account and click on it and change the name.

What other users are showing in Documents and Settings?

Sam,

Hope you like the system :)

Did you ADD your name as user in the User Accounts (you can also add a user in PRO by right clicking on My Computer / MANAGE / +Users and Groups - click on the "+" sign and right click on Users / New User)?

If you do it the second way you double click on the name after you save it and go to Member Of tab and add Administrator and delete User.

Once you have that - you have to login as the new user to setup the profiile policy.

IF you still get Tech in the User name area - you can do a regedit for Find Tech - and enter what ever name you want to appear.

Dan:

So far everything is great. Besides the internals of the machine, the case is nice looking. The black and silver color fits in real nice with my Viewsonic (black and silver) monitor. The case in size, is just right. It fits very nice on the corner of my desk.

Thanks for everything,
Sam

1. Go to Start/Run and type regedit to open the Registry Editor (edit) make sure to back it up first.
2. Navigate to the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
3. Double-click RegisteredOwner and type your name where it says value
4. Click OK
5. Close the Registry Editor

Hope this is what you wanted, I'll probably make a tutorial for it tomorrow.

Change "TECH" to my username via REGEDIT (all matches of "Tech")
The folder name is still C:\Documents and Settings\Tech

Any further ideas how to change it?

Sam

Sorry, I misread the post. It will change your name when you setup a program, though.
Edit: removed link, it was for Server OSes. Sorry.

Pi:

This is no big deal. I'll leave it alone unless I NOW have a problem. Remember above post, I changed the registry entries.

It's just my other machine has my username and I wanted to keep things as simple and common as possible between machines.

Did you search and replace all "tech" with "Sam"? If so, I don't think you should have. What about Windows_base_technologies, ATI Technologies and everything else with "tech" in it? If you backed up the registry first (which I forgot to add first for some reason), restore it and just change the entry I pointed out. Otherwise, just replace "Sam" with "tech", except with some exceptions like SAMI, sample, etc.

Did the Microsoft link I posted work? Edit: ignore that, it was for Servers.

Article below from Microsoft says, in WinXP Home, you can't change
the name under folder... \Documents and Settings\
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q283111/

Article below basiclly says to create a new account and
transfer all the data to the new account, then delete the old account.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1744546,00.asp

Unless you can get an authoritative and proven procedure for editing
the registry, I would not recommend doing it with this account name issue.
WinXP can give you some real headaches with user account password issues
when you start messing around with the accounts. For example, scheduled
tasks might not run due to password issues.

Sam,

Did you do THIS step? I explained to Rich that I always setup a "backdoor" in case something thrashes the Administrator and the users account.

Login as "whoever" Tech if you are using that and go and create your account in Users Accounts and make sure you are in as Administrator. Then boot into YOUR name to create the policy (Documents and Settings). Then you can follow PI's post to change the Registered User in the registry.

Glad you like the system.

Dan,
My fault because I waited too long to set up "Sam". Then I started thinking he live a little far from me for me to jump down there anyway so I changed tech to Sam. Pi has the way to change rest in the registry but I think the "Tech" will remain in Doc and Settings. Short of deleting the user, I have never managed to change that as that.

Sam,

Create YOUR user - then in My Computer there is a way to migrate all the settings from Tech to Sam - it brings over all programs, desktop, emails, favorites, address book, and shortcuts. BUT you will have to login as Administrator to do that. A profile can not copy it's self to another or to it's self when in active login.

But if you have gone to far - a whack and reload "may" be necessary to get you back on the road.

I did not set you up as a user because I did not know how the original machine was composed. And as I tried to explained to Rich - some trojans, malware, and viruses will seek out the original user and Administrator (since ALL XP versions and Server editions have the Administrator account) and disable those accounts. By having a "unique" Adminstrator account that can be backdoor accessible, it gives you a path in Safe Mode to correct or at least diagnose an issue.

Unfortunately, I am off to Knoxville this week for some motorcycle riding and shows.

Sam,
Live with it, please...I think if you make the registry change PI suggested the only remains will be Tech in Docs and Settings, and we were trying to make this easier. I will email you the same fix now.

Sam: The registry fix Pi suggested should work, and as Rich said, only "Tech" in \Documents and Settings should remain.

When you do a clean install of Windows, you specify the owner's name during setup. In this case, although your user account is Sam, the name the computer was registered under was Tech. This should create no problem in installing anything, however, as "Tech" is only the registered name and nothing more - that's why it's showing up as Tech. A lot of times if Windows was installed at the store you purchased your computer at, the registered name is User or Owner. Just a little info in case you were interested.

Regards,
Ray
