A couple of weeks ago I posted that I'm unable to get my dialup to connect
using my TiBook on Tiger10.4.6. The problem was that the modem would dial
out and start the connection with the ISP but then stop only a fraction of a second after 'squaking'. I noticed that there was nothing on the line if I picked up the phone.

I took it to the Apple Store in King of Prussia. The genius deleted the
modem using System Preferences / Network Port Configurations and then adding it back in. That worked for a while. I'm having the same problem again.

Same thing happens in other accounts. The machine will send and receive
faxes, so I don't think it's the modem.

Any ideas on what's going on here?

Did you check to see if there were any software updates available? And did the tech from the store last time say anything in the way of ideas if the problem were to come back?

Thank - the OS is up to date. The guy at the store didn't mention anything else because he quickly fixed it by deleting and reinstalling it. Unfortunately, that didn't work this time.

I'm up n running again. I tried different phone lines, phone wires, phone jacks, running on AC Power, running on batteries. Still can't connect to my ISP. Then I tried connecting to another ISP. It worked!!

I called my ISP, Enter.net, and explained the situation. We tried another phone number, this one in King of Prussia, and I'm getting in. However, I think there's some kind of problem with the modem still because I can not get into the West Chester, Exton, or Paoli modems with this laptop. Very quickly after the modems start squaking, the line drops and goes silent.
