After rereading all the posts here about CrapCleaner and saying a quick prayer  to St Jude (Patron of Hopeless Cases), I finally got the courage to install CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

I used Firefox browser, and it was a smooth download/installation. :cheer2:

I was amazed at the number of temporary internet files that were still on my computer even though I just used DiskCleanup yesterday!

Questions:

What are these items CrapCleaner lists under Tools > Startup?

- "Bv/CplDameon - RUN DLL 32.EXE C: WINDOWS"?

- "nwiz - nwiz.exe.install" ?

I allowed all CrapCleaner default settings except:

- "run in Start Menu." Why would I want it there?

- "add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from within it." I steer clear of toolbars. Any reason to have this one?

Many thanks,

Lina

Yay!:)

Ccleaner is a lot more thorough than Disk Cleanup.

They're for your Nvidia graphics. Nothing to worry about.

I don't have that particular wording in my version (You can check your version by clicking on the "Version" tab). Although that's likely referring to Ccleaner's ability to run a clean at startup. If you tell me your version, I'll let you know for sure.

The yahoo toolbar is harmless, but everyone seems to accidently install it one way or another. In your case, it's not needed and all it would do is take up space on your browser screen.

The version I downloaded (I assume it has the latest update) is v1.30.310.

BTW, so far no logins seem to have been affected, and access to sites seems faster.

Thanks very much for the critique, Seth!

You're very welcome.

I'm using V129. To access the ability to run at startup, I go to "Options" then put a check in "Run Ccleaner when the computer starts".

Most home users will notice a significant increase in page loading after Ccleaner is run. That's because it removes all the needless files that clog up and slow down the browser.

I forgot this Lina:

If Ccleaner does happen to remove a cookie from a particular site that you don't want it to, then do this:

Click Options, cookies, highlight the site from the left column and click the arrow to move it to the "Cookies to keep column".

Do you have CrapCleaner set up to run when the computer starts? If not, how often do you run CrapCleaner?

I hesitate to allow CrapCleaner to run at startup because it just might conflict with the time-consuming, unnessary start-up scan that my beloved Kaspersky AV software insists upon performing. Unless DSL is not connected when I turn on my computer, Kaspersky's startup scan even interferes with any update it is trying to download. I have to wait for startup scan to complete and then connect to DSL. I can live with this because I prefer Kaspersky's easy-to-understand setup and it has kept my computer virus-free.

BTW, my involuntary logouts from this forum seem to have ceased.....because of CrapCleaner? Not sure.

I will add these suspicions to the threads on involuntary logouts started by Tonyd aka Kelly:

I keep a shortcut to CCleaner in my taskbar for easy access. The last thing I do with the computer every day is run CCleaner before I log off for the night.

Why not just set it to run at startup? That's no different than running it at shutdown and it's automatic. BTW-It runs so fast at startup that you won't even know it cleaned house for ya'.

The list of cookies crapcleaner showed for my PC was significant. I had to take some time to review and select them before cleaning. I guess it's better to leave some cookies if in doubt.

Those of you that are OS oriented--I have a general question on these cleaners.

Let me give you an example: When I access K&H, my UserName and Password are saved and when I click on a link, it takes me right-in.
When I run these cleaners, I need to re-enter my Username and Password.

What do I need to UNCHECK in CCleaner to save that information so I do not need to re-enter all the time?

Thanks,
Sam

Sam,
I am certain I told you "cookies" gets unchecked on both screens!

I have another question about these cleaners. There seem to be many debates on whether or not to allow cleaning of "Old Prefetch data." To my knowledge, you should only clear the prefetch before an optimized backup. Any thoughts on that?

Clear the prefetch before you run any scans

I would always clear prefetch ... I have a Prefetch.bat for that purpose:
del E:\Windows\Prefetch\*.* /Q

Also important to turn off system restore on all drives and reboot to clear them.
Empty all Temp folders, especially the Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp which is not emptied by Cleanup.

Self replicators, the trojans, rootkits, keyloggers and other nasties often hide their installer packages in these root folders.
They contain an executable reg key that instructs them to re-install themselves if they are not found on boot.
Often, the only way to keep them from coming back is to eliminate any hidden files used for this purpose.
There are other system folders where they can lurk as well.
System32 folder should be checked for any unusual .dll or exe files that have no properties and odd names.

Adware and the like is easily cleaned without these steps as most of it isn't that dangerous. The really nasty crap often contains these self installing and self replicating packages that will keep coming back all by themselves no matter how many times you clear the actual executable file.

No N3, disabling System Restore has to do with virus or spyware making a comeback, not cleaning crap off a hard drive.

I would say definitely NO. Disabling System Restore removes previous restore points. This is necessary and desirable when you are trying to rid your machine of a virus or trojan (which may be embedded in a restore point) but completely unnecessary if you are only performing a maintenance task.
