This do not call list works very well.
After signing up, I was finally able to answer my phone again
after screening calls for so many years just to avoid telmarketers.

Once you get on the list, make sure you don't voluntarily give
the telemarketers permission to call again. Be extremely careful
what FREE offers you respond to becasue you could be giving
permission for telemarketers to call you again inspite of being
on the do not call list.

After you are on the Do Not Call List, if you ever get a call
from a telemarketer, be polite, and get their company name
and the person's name if possible. If you like to have fun,
begin with a calm but very serious voice saying something like..
"Excuse me Richard, but I have to tell you that you are in
serious trouble." That will get their attention. Then inform
them that they made an illegal phone call because you are
on the Do Not Call List. Make them explain themselves. Then
politely ask them to put you on their Do Not Call list. Make a
record of the date & time and company name. If they ever call
again you must report them. I've never had anyone call back twice.

Overall, the National Do Not Call List is successful.

.. when my husband answered a call concerning double glazing he told the telemarketer that no one was in and he was ransacking the house for valuables...
I expected the police to knock on the door

Just got this update from Suddenly Seniors about the cell-phone telemarketing message:

THE MESSAGE BELOW WAS INCORRECT IN THAT PHONE NUMBERS WILL BE RELEASED IN THREE DAYS. HOWEVER, IT CERTAINLY CAN'T HURT TO REGISTER WITH THE DO NOT CALL LIST.

SORRY FOR THIS ERROR.

Elliot, I don't know. I don't have a cell phone, so I can't try it. HOWEVER, read this quote from the article:

calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.... To prevent this, call the

Also, the following is a classic non sequitur; but I checked, and you can register online. HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS OR GO TO:

Its a stupid law, why on earth would it be Opt-out rather than Opt-in?

Surely the government knows that most people don't want tele-marketers to call.

Thanks for the link, if anyone I know has problems, I'll point them in the right direction.

From their Q&A (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/dncalrt.htm#Exceptions):
Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls.

.. when my husband answered a call concerning double glazing he told the telemarketer that no one was in and he was ransacking the house for valuables...

Good question, but they have to get $$ somehow. :(

Thanks PI

I thought people could find snopes on their own - it should be in EVERYONE's favorite list because of these spam emails.

It always reminds me of an email from a friend who has a friend whose uncle heard from his nephew . . . . . .

When I get one of those emails (and I want to be bothered) I go immediately to snopes.com and check out fact or fiction. I have only gotten ONE email that proved to be fact. The Delete key comes in so handy!

My humble apologies for posting this without checking Snopes. The information came to me in a Suddenly Senior newsletter, and I did not doubt its legitimacy.

I should have searched for the original url for the "article." But that's not always enough -- a Suddenly Senior newsletter once quoted a reputable source about the coordination of VA and Medicare benefits. I searched for the url and read the article -- it was incorrect! ....

Lesson learned. ...
