If I use Internet Explorer I can select File from the top menu and Send to place a shortcut icon for the particular page on my desktop. Is there any way to send a shortcut icon to my desktop when using Firefox???

Right click on Firefox and select 'Send to > Desktop (create shorcut)'.

Kelly, you misunderstand my issue. I know how to create a shortcut. I'm asking how to send a shortcut icon for a specific web page when using Firefox. This can be done when using Internet Explorer. Can it be done when using Firefox?

jcampi: What is your default browser?

Oh, I think I see what you're saying. It's actually relatively simple. Once you're at the website you would like to make a shortcut to, look at the address bar. You should see an icon to the left of the URL (it will still be in the address bar). Hover your mouse over this icon - you should see the arrow turn into a hand. Click on this icon and drag it to an empty spot on the desktop. And there you have it! The only problem is I believe the shortcut you make will load in your default browser, so if IE is your default browser, it may load in IE instead.

Like he said... what is your default browser?
If you have FF as your default browser, you can create an (URL) shortcut in MENU or desktop and when you click on it, it opens in FF to that page.
I have a number of internet shortcuts in my NET menu to open FF directly to a specific site.

Thank you
When John asked his question, I experimented in FF using the technique that you outlined and kept getting the IE icon on my shortcut. Until you mentioned it, it never occurred to me that I was getting the icon from my default browser.
Mystery solved. :hail:

Many thanks for the tip!
I put the Yahoo mail icon into my taskbar instead of on the deskstop.....any harm in doing that? That's where I also have an icon for Outlook Express.
Thanks.

No problem, Lina! And no, no harm at all in putting the shortcut in the taskbar.

I still am having a problem, but need to explain it better. If I drag a shortcut icon onto my desktop when using Firefox it changes to a shortcut that is recognized by Internet Explorer. I want it to stay associated with Firefox and open Firefox when I double click on it.

John:
The problem here is that I assume Internet Explorer is set as your default browser, and whatever browser you use to make a shortcut, it will always load with the *default* browser. If you want to open shortcuts with Firefox, you would have to make FF your default browser:
In FF, go to Tools > Options > in the General tab, click "Check Now" in the Default Browser section > select Yes when prompted to make FF the default browser.

Another thing you could actually do:
If you want to keep Internet Explorer as your default browser, you could make a desktop shortcut in this way:
Right-click on an empty space on the desktop > click New > click Shortcut > in the location box, type (with quotes, wherever Firefox is located) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" http://www.website.com/ > click Next > type a name for the shortcut, click Finish
The shortcut should open in Firefox now, even if your default browser is IE :D

I think you're referring to the QuickLaunch toolbar. No problem placing shortcuts there. It's a good place to place things you access frequently.

In reference to the above. After dragging the icon onto the desktop can one rename the icon & still access the webpage or the site?

Yes, just right-click the icon and select "Rename" from the list.
