Just got a Dell dimension 3100 dropped off to me in order to install and setup a dial up modem.

The damn thing has no PS2 ports!

LOL - It has no parallel ports or serial ports either.

I have had several clients order them and find themselves stuck having to order more hardware to work with these atrocities.

You should have seen the look on my face as I tryed to connect a keyboard  . I thought I was in the freakin twilight zone!

Well, I've got a usb mouse, but no usb keyboard.

...although I have lots of usb cables and ps2 keyboards. I'm going to rewire a ps2 keyboard and make it a usb keyboard.

Damn.

I rewired to no avail.

The +5 and the negative are a given. The other two are d- and d+ (clock and data). Xp say's there's a problem with a usb device. HA HA HA.

Tried swapping the clock and data wires. Same prob. Hmmm...I pulled that keyboard out of a junk box, maybe it's not even working. I'll try it with a known working keyboard.

That's what I meant by this:

Yup - most of the new Dell installs I've been doing have no PS-2; a lot don't have parallel either.

one option is a ps2 to usb adapter

Right, but I didn't have one at the time.

I properly wired the usb connector to the ps2 keyboard. XP found it, but couldn't identify it. I later found out that it can't be done that way, as the ps2 to usb adapters have circuitry in them (I think it's some timing thing).

Anyway, I just picked up a usb keyboard, as it looks like more and more computers are being manufactured without ps2.

My wireless keyboard is USB, but I used the adapter (included, got a wireless optical mouse too for only $10 USD and they work perfectly) to make it PS2. I've seen too many USB keyboard problems.

I don't think that it would cost Dell much to include legacy ports with their PCs.

When they used INtel mobos, it cost them too much to remove them as Intel boards always have Ps2 and parallel as well as serial ports, but they are using some Foxconn boards now, and that is serious crap!
