After fdisk, format, load Win98SE, I'm getting this error msg after Windows starts:

c:\ c:\dosleg.exe bad command

Machine runs OK, but can't figure out what this means.

Does your sound card work. I believe this is a driver for a sound card or something to do with a sound card.

I don't know about this sound card. Device manager isn't complaining about anything. If I put a CD in, CD player plays the CD. CD player has no volume control so you can't change the sound level. Windows' Volume Control has no affect on the sound level. Also when moving the sliders in Volume Control, there's no 'bink' feedback.

Thanks Pete. I read the thread and agree that it was something to do with the sound card. I think I got this message even when booting in Safe Mode. I'll recheck tonight. I know that I got the message when I set msconfig to not load Startup, Autoexec, config - I had all those boxes unchecked and still got the error message.

Well, I got the sound controls to work. Volume Control, Options / Properties. Change from SB16 Mixer (240) to XWAVE System Mixer (DC80). Then I can control the sound levels. New problem, the setting doesn't hold. If I exit Volume Control and bring it back up, Mixer device is back to SB16.

To set the default mixer device, I went to the Multimedia control panel and changed it there. Still not getting system sounds. Maybe work on that tomorrow.
